1. Introduction

This document describes the software installation outline and detail for the Multi-Functional Controller, which is a system designed to provide multi-purpose solutions for real-time control and management of vehicle functions and accessories from a smart device. The Multi-Functional Controller is a new type of flexible dynamic control system geared specifically towards car accessory management. The interactive user controls all car accessories and features connected to the MFC unit from one central software control panel (the SoftDash application) that runs on a device such as a Car PC, Palm Pilot, Pocket PC or Smart Phone. These features and accessories include but are not limited to keyless entry, engine cutoff, car alarm, window roll up/down, remote start, engine diagnostics and custom features. The MFC establishes a two-way communication with the vehicle hardware, and the remote user. Connection between the user’s smart device and car is wireless via Bluetooth or physically via serial data cable. All accessory controls are fully customizable and reconfigurable to suit the user’s style and needs.

It is recommended that you read these simple guidelines carefully before use, to ensure the safe operation of the module. The Multi-Functional Controller should be installed by a professional automotive electronics installer.

The fact that there is unlimited control through the SoftDash software application on the user’s smart device could result in the user putting the accessories in an unconditional or dangerous state, e.g. (cranking the ignition of a manual transmission vehicle in gear, disabling ignition or fuel, controlling moving parts without caution, e.g. window, door poppers, hydraulics, linear actuators, etc). Because of this unforeseen multi-functionality, Connect2Car Inc. CANNOT VALIDATE NOR ENSURE THAT ANY OR ALL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS ARE MET DURING INSTALLATION AND THEREFORE ACCEPTS NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR THE LOSS CAUSED BY THE INSTALLATION OR USE OF THE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CONTROLLER.

6. System Overview

The SoftDash application serves as the user interface to the vehicle, and runs on a Car PC, Palm Pilot, Pocket PC or Smart Phone. The mobile device or PC acts as a tool to hold, configure and deploy the commands which are actually run in real time on the hardware controller while reporting status of activities back to the user.

Sample commands include doors lock/unlock, remote auto-start, 1 aux for trunk release (or other applicable accessories) and vehicle ignition and fuel disable/enable.

7. Installing the SoftDash Software Application

Use an approved Device

You must have a compatible smart device to control the MFC. The link lists the different approved phone/device brands.

Download and Install the Free SoftDash software

• Go on the link to download the following to a folder of your choice on your computer. Select your phone/device brand and model to download the software for your particular phone/device.

• Download the SoftDash program (softdash.jar).

• Download the SoftDash installer (softdash.jad).

• Download the installation instructions.

• Follow the installation instructions to install the SoftDash application on your device.

8. Getting Started

Launch the SoftDash application from the Applications menu on your device.

The screenshots above show the SoftDash application loading and its HOME screen after loading. The home screen lists the menus of the application.

8.1 RECONNECT

Press the “Select” button to reconnect to the last connected car (set as default). The reconnection options can be changed or specified under the SETTINGS menu.

8.2 SEARCH CAR

On the HOME screen, scroll down to “SEARCH CAR” and press the “Select” button.

• The application searches for cars (with MFC units installed) within a 50ft range and lists them out. The blue expanding circles at the top left hand corner indicate that search is in progress.

• SoftDash also comes with a simulation mode that lets you try out recipes and see how the MFC works, even if you do not have the actual unit.

• If Search is complete and your car/device is not listed, be sure you are within the 50ft range and that the Bluetooth on your phone is turned on, then try refreshing search by scrolling up to highlight the “REFRESH SEARCH” oval and pressing the “Select” button.

When your car is listed, scroll down to highlight it and press the “Select” button to pair both devices (your phone and your car’s MFC unit) and load the control screen based on your selected or default skin. Skins can be modified in the SETTINGS menu.

8.3 HELP

On the HOME screen, scroll down to “HELP” and press the “Select” button.

8.5 SETTINGS

On the HOME screen, scroll down to “SETTINGS” and press the “Select” button to go to the SoftDash Configuration screen. The SETTINGS menu contains all available configurations and settings for the SoftDash application. Configuration modifications are made on this menu.

8.5.1 CHANGE CONFIGURATION

• The CHANGE CONFIGURATION sub-menu enables you select a preset Factory or User configuration. Scroll to highlight CHANGE CONFIGURATION, and press the select button (OK button on most phones) on your phone to open it up.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

Factory Configurations

Scroll to highlight FACTORY CONFIGURATIONS and press the select or OK button. The FACTORY CONFIGURATION screen opens up listing out the various preset factory configurations for you to choose from.

• Scroll to highlight your desired configuration, and then press the select or OK button to load the highlighted configuration.

• Also, you can press the “Options” button to load the highlighted configuration (LOAD THIS), save your current configuration under the FACTORY CONFIGURATIONS folder (SAVE CURRENT CONFIG), access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu.

• Press “Back” to return to the previous screen without selecting any configuration.

User Configurations

Scroll to highlight USER CONFIGURATIONS and press the select or OK button. The USER CONFIGURATION screen opens up listing out the previously saved user configurations for you to choose from. If none have been previously saved, “(no data)” is displayed on the screen.

• Scroll to highlight your desired configuration, and then press the select or OK button to load the highlighted configuration.

• Also, you can press the “Options” button to load the highlighted configuration (LOAD THIS), save your current configuration under the USER CONFIGURATIONS folder (SAVE CURRENT CONFIG), access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu.

• Press “Back” to return to the previous screen without selecting any configuration.

8.5.2 INSTALLER WIRING

• The Installer wiring sub-menu enables you view the eight (8) car accessories/features which you can control with your phone or device as wired during installation, or as indicated by your selected factory or user configuration, as well as modify the settings for the switches of these eight (8) accessories/features.

• Scroll to highlight “Installer Wiring”, and press the select button (OK button on most phones) on your phone to open it.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

• In this instance (screen shot above) the FUEL CUTOFF accessory was selected. As seen on top of the screen, FUEL CUTOFF is the Label for ACC1 (accessory output 1). You should label exactly what the installer connected to ACC1. Scroll down to highlight FUEL CUTOFF. If FUEL CUTOFF was wired to ACC1, then leave it that way. If instead, some other accessory such as ARM, DISARM, TRUNK, etc was wired to ACC1, change the highlighted FUEL CUTOFF to the correct accessory by simply erasing FUEL CUTOFF and typing in the new accessory.

• Scroll down to highlight and modify SWITCH SAFETY. For every other accessory excluding FUEL CUTOFF, enable the “Off on Disconnect” option and disable the “Disable Timeout” option. For the FUEL CUTOFF accessory, disable the “Off on Disconnect” option and enable the “Disable Timeout” option, as you want FUEL CUTOFF to remain enabled even when you are disconnected or away from your car until you personally disable it.

• For all other accessories excluding FUEL CUTOFF, scroll down to highlight and modify or specify the Maximum active time in seconds, which is the maximum amount of time in seconds the accessory output can take to execute before canceling. In the above screen shot, 15495 seconds was specified.

• Press “Back” to save your changes and go back to the previous screen. Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu

When you get back to the Default Config screen, press “Options” to set your modifications as default (Set as Default), load the modified installation setup (Load install Setup), Save your current setup (Save current Setup), access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, access a help (HELP) menu, or exit (EXIT) the installer wiring sub-menu.

8.5.3 MAP BUTTON >RECIPE

• The MAP BUTTON>RECIPE sub-menu enables you assign buttons on our phone/device to recipes or accessory outputs. You can make the buttons on your phone/device control which ever recipe or accessory you like.

• Scroll to highlight “MAP BUTTON>RECIPE”, and press the select button (OK button on most phones) on your phone to open up the Map Button>Recipe screen.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

• On the MAP BUTTON>RECIPE screen, combinations are listed in the order:

BUTTON NUMBER: “ACCESSORY OUTPUT” = RECIPE. For example, as shown on the screen above, the “2” number button controls the “START” engine accessory output which is wired to “PULSE ACC2” (recipe ACC2).

• Press “Options” to change the accessory output or button name, as well as access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu.

• Also, on the MAP BUTTON>RECIPE screen, scroll to highlight recipe or accessory output to modify, and press the select or OK button to open up the SOFTDASH RECIPES screen.

• On the SOFTDASH RECIPES screen, you are given the options of selecting from factory (default) recipes, user (modded) recipes previously saved, or obtain recipes from an online database if you have internet connection on your phone or device.

• Scroll to highlight FACTORY (DEFAULT) RECIPES and press the select or OK button to open up its screen.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

• On the FACTORY (DEFAULT) RECIPES screen, select the right recipe to match your accessory output based on the wiring during installation. Using the previous example, if button “2” was highlighted and selected on the MAP BUTTON>RECIPE screen, you should scroll down to PULSE2.xml and press the select or OK button to select it and go back to the MAP BUTTON>RECIPE screen.

• Certain accessory output should be mapped to certain recipes. For example, ‘Windows Up” or “Windows Down” require long pulses (e.g. if “Window Up” is wired to accessory output ACC3, on the FACTORY (DEFAULT) RECIPES screen, scroll down to select PULSE3_LONG.xml). Also, Fuel Cutoff requires an accessory switch and not an accessory pulse, as it is supposed to remain on when switched on till it is switched off (e.g. if “Fuel Cutoff” is wired to accessory output ACC5, on the FACTORY (DEFAULT) RECIPES screen, scroll down to select SWITCH_ACC5.xml. If the required switch is not available on the Factory Recipe screen, try the Map Recipes Online option to locate and save it under the USER Recipes for future use).

8.5.4 VIEW/EDIT RECIPES

• The View/Edit Recipes enables you view and edit or delete (modify) factory and user recipes, view and import online recipes, as well as create your own recipes.

• Scroll to highlight “View/Edit Recipes”, and press the select button (OK button on most phones) on your phone to open up the SOFTDASH RECIPES screen.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

Modify Factory Recipes

On the SoftDash Recipes screen, scroll to highlight “MODIFY FACTORY RECIPES” and press the select or OK button to open up the MODIFY FACTORY RECIPES screen.

• On the MODIFY FACTORY RECIPES screen, scroll to highlight recipe to modify, then press the select or OK button to open up the modification screen for the highlighted recipe (it is advised that factory recipes should not be modified, as they have been preset and configured suitably by the manufacturer).

• Or, press options to delete the highlighted recipe, access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

Modify User Recipes

On the SoftDash Recipes screen, scroll to highlight “MODIFY USER RECIPES” and press the select or OK button to open up the MODIFY USER RECIPES screen.

• On the MODIFY USER RECIPES screen, scroll to highlight recipe to modify, then press the select or OK button to open up the modification screen for the highlighted recipe.

• Or, press options to delete the highlighted recipe, to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

View Recipes Online

• You can only use this menu if you have internet connection on your device from your service provider.

• On the SoftDash Recipes screen, scroll to highlight “View Recipes Online” and press the select or OK button.

You will be prompted to allow the SoftDash application to use the network for sending and receiving data. Press “Yes”

Different access points for internet connection will then be listed for you to choose from based on your phone service provider. Scroll to highlight your choice and press “select” to view all available recipes on the online database.

Create New Recipe

This sub-menu enables you create your own recipes.

On the SoftDash Recipes screen, scroll to highlight “Create New Recipe” and press the select or OK button to open up the Create New Recipe screen.

Scroll to highlight the Recipe Name option and enter a name for your new recipe (shown as “no name” on screen shot above)

Scroll down to highlight the Recipe Step Button Type feature, and press the select or OK button to view its options and select your choice (Momentary Button or Push Button).

• Scroll down to highlight the Loop StartSteps feature, and press the select or OK button to view its options and select your choice (True or False).

• Scroll down to highlight the Activation Sequence feature, and press the select or OK button to view its options and select your choice (FIRSTSTEP or FINALSTEP).

• Scroll down to highlight the Deactivation Sequence feature, and press the select or OK button to view its options and select your choice (FISTSTEP or FINALSTEP).

• When you are done, press “Back”.

You will be prompted to save the newly created recipe in your phone’s hard drive for future use. Press “Yes” to save, or press “Options” to say “No” and go back to the previous screen.

8.5.5 CONNECTION SETTINGS

• The Connection Settings sub-menu enables you specify or modify the settings for connecting the SoftDash application on your device with your car.

• Scroll to highlight “Connection Settings”, and press the select button (OK button on most phones) on your phone to open up the Connection Settings screen.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

• On the Connection Settings screen, scroll to highlight the AutoConnect option, and press the select or OK button to enable it if you want the SoftDash application on your phone/device to automatically connect to the MFC unit in your car, or the last connected car once you launch the application.

• Scroll down to highlight and modify the Number of Tries option. This specifies how many attempts your phone will make to contact the last connected car. If this contact is not made after the specified number of attempts, it will go to the main menu where you will have to do a manual search for a car to connect to. It is specified as 10 (ten) by default

• Scroll down to highlight and modify the Reconnect Interval option. This specifies the interval length between connection trials in milliseconds.

• Scroll down to highlight and modify the Last Connected Car option for the AutoConnect feature, and press the select or OK button to view options and select your car choice.

Scroll down to highlight Power Save option, and enable the Disconnect if Idle check box. This is a power saving feature which disconnects if you were inactive for a while.

Scroll down to highlight and specify the Idle Time feature in seconds if you initially enabled the Disconnect if Idle option. Idle Time specifies how long the program waits for inactivity before disconnection. It is specified by 120 seconds by default.

After your modifications, press “Save” to save your modified connection settings, or press “Options” to cancel changes, access a help (HELP) menu, or exit connection settings.

• The SKINS sub-menu enables you select your desired skin for the control screen.

• Scroll to highlight “SKINS”, and press the select button (OK button on most phones) on your phone to open up the SKINS screen.

• Press “Options” to access a log screen (VIEW LOG) containing previous modifications, or access a help (HELP) menu, or press “Back” to go back to the previous screen

• On the SKINS screen scroll to highlight your desired skin, and press the select or OK button to use the highlighted skin.

9. FAQs

What is SoftDash?

SoftDash is our Software Dashboard product. It provides you with all the capabilities of your dashboard plus a whole lot more.

And what is the MFC?

The MFC is our multi-functional controller, it works hand in hand with SoftDash providing you with unlimited possibilities such as engine on/off, door lock/unlock, alarm on/off and the list is endless. To use SoftDash you need a compatible device and the MFC

How do I know if my device is compatible?

• For a list of Softdash compatible devices click here or check your device for MIDP 2.0 with JSR-82 Support (Bluetooth wireless technology API)

What else do I need apart from the MFC?

To use the window roll down/up feature you would need an additional window roll down module. The MFC talks to the window roll down module and tells it when to roll up/down the window.

An alarm system with a negative trigger would be necessary if the MFC is used to control an Alarm System with or without auto-start.Or just upgrade to the MFC V3 package that comes with a complete alarm system with autostart.

Another one is the ignition bypass unit for cars with chipped/encrypted keys. It just sends a tricked signal to the carÕs computer so that it can start the engine. This applies to any general remote starter that is installed in any car with a chipped key (mostly with newer cars). Otherwise the MFC is all you need.

Can my device tell me when my car has performed the action I sent to it? Meaning, can I get feedback from my car to my device?

Bluetooth wireless technology communication with the MFC is two way. The MFC will not do anything if it does not see (can not communicate/reach) the controller device, also the controller device will not acknowledge an action response made by the user, unless it gets a reply from the MFC (except if user is running software in simulation mode). So that way neither party (device or MFC), will not proceed with a user action request if there is a break in communication.

How can I get this device installed in my car?

Installation of the MFC is straight forward if you know how to install car alarms/electronics. Any standard alarm/electronics installer can install the MFC system. The unit also comes with a complete step by step installation manual for both software (on the controller device) and hardware (in any vehicle). At the moment we also have affiliated installer locations for convenience in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut Areas, and we continue to expand our reach. If you are an installer, and want to carry the MFC system, or provide installation support, please contact us and we will be glad to add you to installer contact/vendor database. If your local dealer does not carry the MFC, we will gladly assist your local shop on becoming a Dealer.

What is the range of Bluetooth wireless technology?

The MFC 2 way communication tested in an outdoor parking lot produced 55ft of connectivity range and 150ft of communication range after connectivity. Connectivity is the initial process where the 2 devices (car and phone/PDA) search and initiate connection. Once connection is initiated, it received up to 150ft of communication on the class 2 device. This range will be smaller indoors.

Software Configurations.How do I configure it to my own car settings?

In regards to the software setup. The MFC is the device installed into the vehicle. After the installer connects the MFC to the vehicle, the next step is to install the software configurations for those devices, e.g.output1=door lock action, output2= window roll down, e.g. a software button might control multiple outputs, e.g. with the case of engine start, you need about 3 outputs, 1 for the ignition, 2 for Key accessory 1 (radio etc), and 2 (heater controls, distributor etc). So you can configure the button to activate them all in a sequence. Start acc1, wait a sec, start acc2, wait 1 sec, then crank ignition till engine starts, where the engine start is monitored from the tachometer, and timed also. If the tachometer displays a red signal on your device from the engine, then the engine started, if not it keeps trying for the duration of the timeout e.g. 4 seconds. All this can be configured in one button action recipe.

Also you can download already made standard configurations from the site (on software/devices page), and you can also share your cool made configurations with other users by just sending them the recipe file. They would just have to change the outputs in the recipe, to match their own hardware connections. (E.g. the ignition is connected on output 3 in your car but in your friend’s car, it was connected on output 5 of his own MFC).

Are there any software securities? Can someone hack my car system with another device?

No, the wireless communication with the MFC over Bluetooth wireless technology is done over an authenticated and secure encrypted connection. I.e. first you need a password to connect to your car and then data sent over that connection is encrypted.

Other devices can only see (not connected yet) your MFC based on your own settings.

1. Discoverable/Connectable

(Can be discovered and be connected to, where the connection will only be possible based on your connection settings.

2 Not Discoverable/Connectable

(Can not be generally discovered by other devices, but can be connected to by devices that know the address of your MFC e.g. your own cell phone, and connection will only be possible if the outside device passes your connection rules.

3. Not Discoverable/Not Connectable

(i.e. technically a one way street here, you cannot do anything to the MFC,

however, the MFC can connect to you. i.e. your car searches for your device, and

can connect to you, but you can't connect to your car. This mode is not so

convenient sometimes/cases.)

For any connection to your MFC, you can select one of the following options:

Authentication/encryption: (default) Authentication Requires password. You can pair with a specific device, e.g. your own cell phone, and that device will be on your trusted device list.

Authentication/no encryption: No authentication password to connect/no encryption: (i.e. you can turn it off if you want). For more information on Bluetooth wireless security please visit learn about Bluetooth wireless security .

Can this be installed in any car?

Yes. You can install this product in any car. Any alarm installer can install this product, and it also comes with a picture and page by page installation manual.

Is it possible to have my system controlled by two different devices via Bluetooth wireless technology? E.g. my computer and Symbian phone.

You can only control the system by one Bluetooth wireless technology device at any given time (the device also has to pass authentication before connection is allowed). Using Bluetooth wireless technology, either the computer or phone can be connected. Both of them cannot be connected at the same time, except if you also have a serial cable connection for one and Bluetooth wireless technology for the other. For example, outside the car--> Bluetooth wireless technology device, inside the car --> Serial connection (perhaps car PC). If the serial port becomes active, the Bluetooth wireless technology connection is disabled.

Can I put a picture of my car in the software?

Yes. You can customize your own skins in the software, change the sounds and rename or remap buttons e.t.c.

Can I read my tachometer with my Mobile phone, Palm Pilot or iPaq?

Yes. You will be able to do that and also customize the effects that you want to happen when you hit your shift point and redline settings. You can also customize actions to happen when you hit a certain RPM, e.g. if I hit 5900 rpm, flash my neon underbody kits, or if I hit 6000 rpm, activate the NOS valve.

What kind of things I can control in my car with this product?

You can control most electronic accessories of the vehicle such as, power windows, door locks, lights, engine start, alarm system, strobes, door poppers, actuators, air-ride suspension and hydraulics are just a few examples. So can I control my stereo with my Mobile phone or Palm Pilot/Pocket PC Device?

You can only turn on and off the stereo with the MFC, to change controls such as volume, and change stations etc, you should get a nice universal remote control software that uses the infrared port on your handheld/device. Do a search for universal remote on or . is another good place

Can I drive the car with my palm pilot/ Pocket PC Device?

No, that would extremely dangerous.

Does the vehicle need to be ON to be able to control the featured functions?

No, the vehicle does not have to be on to control the featured functions, if you have the MFC-V2 which is equipped with a Class 2 Bluetooth wireless technology antenna.

In the Pocket PC app I've installed, the "Tach" screen is running. Can you give me some real-world models of how this screen should be used?

There are aftermarket devices called shiftlights, whereby a driver sets a given RPM value where he intends to shift gear, when the engine revs up to the preset value, a light blinks, to indicate to the driver his shift point. They also use this to monitor Redlining of the engine.

Using SoftDash, the tach screen gives the user a software controlled shift indicator, along with all the software goodies such as custom skin, voice over etc, all from their handheld unit. 

Furthermore, some people can make custom recipes(in the new software only) that respond to tachometer events, e.g if RPM past a certain value, do some intended action.

On the "Controls" screen, is there any way to customize the names of the buttons?

To access the menu on a pocket PC device, hit the center key. There are drop down menu's on the main screen and the controls screen. 

All the buttons are customizable. By going into Menu> Options> Control Switch Settings.  In the first drop down menu bar, select desired button.  eg. Accessory 1.  In Accessory 1- Here you can edit the name and color to be displayed on the main screen. This setting falls under "BASIC" on the top menu bar.

On the "Controls" screen, how would a door lock operate? Would "Accessory 1" unlock the doors and "Accessory 2" lock?

This can vary depending on how the installation was performed.  Actually this is where the installer comes into play. Door lock recipes for most cars a pretty much sending a pulse from the unit to the door controller of the vehicle. Some other cars do more things, e.g like a single pulse unlocks driver door only and double unlocks all 4 doors. Anyway, Connect2Car supports recipe logistics for various vehicles, and maintains an active forum and support line for the installers.

I know that recipes could be created, but I'm wondering if you can create a "lock" recipe when button one is activated and an "unlock" when the same button is deactivated.

Yes this is the beauty of the product and software.

How do I create recipes? I know they're XML files, but is there an application that can be downloaded to do this? Where do they go once they're created?

Right now the PPC software does not give user access to the raw files, however they get saved in the program folder on the PPC and you can transfer the file to another unit to share such recipes.

With the new upcoming PPC software release, the user is given more control. This new release is also already available for the MIDP phones version of the software.
