Seniors- The Formula for Life Run will take place at Ft. Recovery High School on Sunday, March 5 at 2 p.m. All benefits go to an orphanage in Haiti. HS seniors who participate will be eligible to win a $1000 scholarship. Each person you recruit for the race counts as an additional vote for you towards winning the scholarship! Visit and search “Scholarship Run” to get registered.

FRHS students can take an AP Exam (sign up is in March) to try to earn college credits. If you are taking an AP course, you must study hard, and take the test!! Be sure to ask your college admission counselor about earning these credits as well.

• Students with disabilities who plan to take an AP Exam in May can request accommodations by contacting Mrs. Kaiser know no later than February 5.

Seniors: Have you stayed true to your DARE promise to not use drugs or alcohol, or have made a new resolution to live drug free? If so, you are invited to the annual DARE Luncheon on April 11, 2017 at the Elk’s Club on 127 south of Celina.  Students attending will leave FRHS at 10:45 a.m. and return around 2:00 p.m. Students wishing to attend should contact Mrs. Billenstien by April 4.

Essay contest for 9th-10th graders: the Mercer County RTL is sponsoring an essay contest and prizes range from $50-$150. All applicants must submit an essay (500-800 words) with the title “Why I Am Pro Life” and will receive a free pro-life t-shirt. Contact Janelle Homan at hanellepoeppelman@ for more info. All essays are due March 6.

Vocational:

The West Central Ohio Workforce Development Initiative is offering Welding courses to seniors and adults who wish to receive training and employment in the area of welding. The classes will be held M-Th 6-9:30 p.m. February 20-April 2017 and Certificates of Completion will be awarded. High School students receive a substantial discount for the course (this course is not intended for students who are currently in the Tri Star Welding program). Apply by February 3 if possible. Mercer Health is offering a Medical Exploring Program for HS students on March 22.  Students will be able to explore future volunteer and career opportunities and learn more about Mercer Health.  There will be a presentation and a behind the scenes tour of the hospital.  Several career fields will be explored-- not just nursing. See the email from Mrs. K (sent 1-18-17) for more details. Sign up in the Guidance Office by March 14 if you would like to attend!

4. The Joyce Ivy Foundation provides females who are interested in attending an Ivy League College (Brown, Yale, Harvard, etc.) the opportunity to attend a summer seminar to learn more about the county’s top colleges and universities. If interested, visit . Applications due March 1.

5. The University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) is offering scholarship testing to HS sophomores, juniors, and seniors on the following dates. Students can win sizable scholarships (up to full tuition) based on their performance on the test. Juniors who attend the scholarship testing day can apply to UNOH for free!

6. John Jay Center for Learning (affiliated with Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Wesleyan) in Portland, IN offers beginning-level college courses at a very reasonable cost Call 260-729-5525.

7. Both eligibility centers require that test scores (i.e. ACT) be sent directly from the testing agency. See Mrs. Kaiser if you need to register with either of these athletic clearinghouses because I need to mail your transcript to them! Cost is approximately $75.

8. Several Colleges offer FREE (or reduced) tuition for students who meet low income qualifications (like the Miami U Access Initiative). YOU need to ASK the college (or check their financial aid site) if they have such a program. Don’t be afraid to apply to your dream school!

SCHOLARSHIPS / GRANTS / LOANS:

1. Application advice:

a. If you choose to complete a paper application: Any/all applications you complete should be done in INK (or typed). Do not use pencil—appearance is important.

b. Don’t wait too long to complete your applications! You never know when school will be delayed or cancelled, so ask for letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc., well in advance!

c. Obey deadlines!

2. In addition to the FAFSA, some colleges require a CSS Profile/additional forms to be completed before awarding financial aid (Stanford, Vanderbilt, Tulane and Case Western are examples). Be sure to ask you financial aid office what forms must be completed for your grants, scholarships and loans!

3. WSU Academic Performance Scholarship Information is available at wright.edu/lake/scholarships. (apply November 1-February 18) and wright.edu/scholarships (apply by February 1).

• WSU has a scholarship that offers FREE TUITION to all graduating valedictorians and salutatorians in the state of Ohio. Apply by February 1.

4. Monsanto is offering a $1500 scholarship for students interested in the ag industry (science, technology, business, engineering, etc.). Find out more at . FFA membership is NOT required. Applications due February 1.

5. Clarence & Ruth Rabe Memorial Scholarship ($500-Sponsored by the FR Chamber of Commerce): This is the first local scholarship for the class of 2017. Applications will be distributed in World History class and are also available online. Deadline is February 3.

6. Mercer County Elks is offering several scholarships. Visit for more information.

a. Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards: eligible applicants are: any child, grandchild, step-child, step-grandchild or legal ward of a living Elk who joined on or before April 1, 2014, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2014. The Elk must be a paid member- up through March 31, 2017. Great-Grandchildren are not eligible. Scholarship awards are $4000. Applicants must take the ACT or SAT by December 31. The ENF Legacy Award Application is only available online at enf/scholars/legacy/rules.cfm and is due by noon on February 3.

b. Emergency Educational Grants are available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. Contact Jane Heiby at 419-925-4232 for more information.

7. Charles L. Warren Memorial Heritage Scholarship: No more than three applicants from one school will be considered for this scholarship. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or better and must also plan to attend an Ohio college or university. To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need (i.e. free or reduced or lunch or fee waivers).  Applications can be found at and are due February 3.

8. Celina Insurance Group is offering 3- $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors who will be pursuing a 2 or 4 year degree in the insurance industry (Actuarial Science, Business, Communications, Computer Science, Finance, Pre-Law, Risk Management & insurance, etc.) Applications due February 10.

9. National Co-Op Scholarships are available to students entering a WACE partner college (University of Toledo and Cincinnati are examples) in the 2016-17 academic year. A recent FR graduate did receive one of these scholarships(. You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 to apply. Visit for more information. Deadline is February 15.

10. Stolly Insurance Group’s SUCCEED Scholarships ($750 each): Seniors who plan to enroll in secondary education within the next year are eligible. Scholarships awarded for essay submissions received. Apply at  (click on Community) by February 17.

11. DARE Scholarship: Mercer County DARE Boosters will be awarding several $500 scholarships to seniors. Two scholarship winners planning to attend WSU-Lake Campus will receive an additional $500! All seniors who have remained true to heir DARE promise (not to use drugs or alcohol) are invited to the annual DARE luncheon on April 11, 2017 at the Elks Club of Mercer County—see Mrs. Billenstein for more information. Applications for the scholarship are due February 17.

12. Darke Rural Electric Cooperative Inc. (grade 10, 11, & 12): The Darke REC Inc. is awarding several scholarships:

• The Darke Rural Electric Scholarship (up to $4700) is available to seniors whose parents are members. Personal interviews will be held February 27. **After applying, students MUST complete a leave request form and provide Mrs. Jutte with a copy of the letter they receive stating their interview date and time to be excused from school. Deadline to apply is February 15.

• They will sponsor two students (sophomores or juniors) for an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. in June. Your parents must be a member of Darke Rural Electric. Deadline to apply is March 1.

13. Technical Majors: Midmark Corporation is offering one Technical Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Darke, Miami, Mercer, Auglaize and Shelby county school. The scholarship is worth $20,000 and comes with summer employment opportunities and a full time position after the completion of their degree. There is a three year work obligation after graduation at Midmark. Eligible students must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems, and Industrial Engineering at an accredited four-year institution. Deadline for scholarship applications is February 24.

14. Mercy Health/St. Rita’s Health Partners: 10-$1500 scholarships will be awarded to a high school senior who is interested in a future medical profession. Applications due February 24.

15. MED Foundation of Mercer Health Scholarship (grade 12): Mercer Health is offering scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing a career in the medical profession. The goal of the MED Foundation is to award one scholarship to each school in Mercer County. Applicants must have an ACT score of 25 or higher and other restrictions apply. Application is available online at  and are due February 28.

16. OOGEEP scholarship (50-$1000 awards) is for those interested in a career in the crude oil, natural gas industry, or related field. Applications can be found at and are due March 1.

17. Cooper Farms will award scholarships at each of its Ft. Recovery, St. Henry, Van Wert, and Oakwood facilities. This scholarship is open to all seniors, and will be awarded to students who have excelled in the classroom and have shown outstanding leadership attributes.  This scholarship is open to all seniors, but special consideration will be afforded to those pursuing careers in agriculture as well as students of Cooper Farms team members. Applications must be submitted by March 1.

18. Wabash Mutual Telephone is sponsoring two scholarship programs.

a. Educational Scholarship Award Program ($3000): Applicant must be a child/legal ward of a Wabash Mutual Telephone member. GPA of 2.5 is required. Deadline is March 1.

b. Foundation for Rural Service ($2500): Applicants must be interested in returning to a rural community after college. A GPA with a C average is required. Deadline is March 1.

19. Paul Lefeld Family Memorial Scholarship (3-$1000 awards): Available to seniors enrolling in a technical school or majoring in agriculture. Applications due March 10.

20. Michelle Bruggeman Volunteer Award: $500 cash will be awarded to a Mercer County senior who has demonstrated outstanding volunteerism. This award is open to all seniors, and applicants need not attend college to apply. Deadline is March 15.

21. Leitzell Family Foundation Agricultural/ Horticultural Scholarship Award (Grade 12): It is the intent of this scholarship to provide financial aid to any individual from Mercer County, Ohio who shows continuous interest and enthusiasm in the field of agriculture or horticulture. Such interests could be manifested through active participation in such programs as 4-H, FFA, Scouts, etc. and must be continued into secondary education in appropriate career-oriented programs. The initial scholarship varies from $1500-$5000 and may be renewable. The recipient must maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA for renewal. Applications must be returned to the FRHS Guidance Office by March 16.

22. First Choice Credit Union, Coldwater will award two $750 scholarships to high school seniors (or current college students) who are members of a First Choice Credit Union, Inc. and are in pursuit of a post-secondary education of any kind, and is not limited to colleges and universities. You can become a new member now and apply. Applications are available at or in the Guidance Office. Due March 31.

23. The University Women’s Club of Mercer County has 2 programs available for females planning to continue their education in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree:

a. Annual Scholarship Loans for $700 (renewable for 4 years) Repayment of these interest-free loans begins one year after termination of college.

b. Annual Scholarship Grants for $1000

Only one application is necessary for both programs. Call Kelly Hone at 419-305-2117 if you have questions. Applications are due March 31.

24. Lefeld Welding Supplies Scholarship: Lefeld Welding Supplies is awarding (2) $1,000 scholarship grants to graduating seniors pursuing training or education in a skilled trade metal working career.  Applicant must be from a Mercer or Auglaize County High Schools within the Tri-Star district. Application is available at and is due to the Civic Foundation, by April 1.

25. Racing for Relief Scholarship ($500): Applicants must be involved in the Racing for Relief organization (Mercer County: see ). Open to seniors and current college students. Applications due April 1.

26. Randy Griesdorn Memorial Scholarship: $1000 will be awarded to a senior who will be majoring in auto/body, auto mechanics (or related field), diesel mechanics, Technology (precision machining, welding, or electronics. Applications are due April 1.

27. Mercer County Farm Bureau Scholarship: Students entering college in the fall (or current college freshmen) majoring in Agriculture are eligible. Parents of the applicant must be members of the Mercer County Farm Bureau in good standing. A $500 scholarship will be given and student must maintain a 2.0 GPA for the quarter/semester. Applications are due April 1.

28. Operation Freedom Support: 6-$500 scholarships will be given to students who has a parent, step-parent, sibling, or step-sibling that is either active, reserve or retired member of the Armed Forces. This is a guaranteed scholarship for one lucky FR student! Applications due April 1.

29. Armcorp Construction: $500 scholarship for students entering a construction-related or construction-management field. Applications due April 1.

30. ACME Baseball Scholarship: Five $500 awards will be given to qualifying seniors. Requirements include: must have played at least one year Varsity Acme Baseball and a 2.5 minimum GPA. Applications due April 1.

31. Mercer County Retired Teachers: This $500 scholarship is open to students majoring in education (2 or 4 year program). Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.8 or higher and demonstrate financial need. Applications are due April 1.

32. ARMCORP Construction Scholarship: This $500 scholarship is open to seniors pursuing a 2 or 4 year degree in a construction-related field. It is sponsored by the Mercer County Civic Foundation and applications are due April 1.

33. William D. Squires Scholarships: The William D. Squires Scholarship is primarily need-based and is only for students from Ohio. (Each applicant must have an EFC (from FAFSA/SAR) of less than $8,000.) A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required. Applications are available at: . Apply from February 15-April 5.

34. Gordon Orthodontics is offering a $1000 scholarship to HS seniors who are or were previous patients. This scholarship is for seniors, and a minimum 3.5 GPA and ACT score of 24 are recommended (not required). Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, strong participation in school activities (particularly as it relates to the arts) and community service. Applications are available at and in the guidance office. Deadline is April 6.

35. Edison State Academic Scholarship applications are due April 7.

36. Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (in conjunction with the Ohio Legislature) is awarding over 130 scholarships to 2017 graduating seniors. These awards range from $1,500-$14,000. Applicants must plan to attend one of the specific career-technical (Ohio) colleges listed on the application. All are associate’s degree or diploma programs…Accounting, Business, Computer, Criminal Justice, Dental Assisting, Electronics, Medical Assisting, Nursing, Paralegal, Technology, Vet Tech, Visual Communications and more! Deadline is April 14.

37. DP&L/Vectren Energy Leadership Scholarship (3-$1000 awards): This scholarship is designed to honor graduating seniors who demonstrate effective leadership skills and energy knowledge. Applications can be found at . Due date is April 15.

38. Ohio Valley Construction Education Fund is offering scholarships ($500-$2500) to candidates pursuing a career in the construction industry. Scholarship application can be found online at . Call 937-704-0111 or email outreach@ for more information. Applications due April 25.

39. Press Pros Magazine MAC Athlete of the Year: 2-$1000 awards (one boy, one girl) will be awarded to a student who has participated in high school sports. Applications due April 28.

40. B. Davis Scholarship ($1000): This website was developed solely for the purpose of helping students locate and apply for scholarships, and is open to junior and seniors: . Deadline is May 22.

41. Robert A. Klingler Co., L.P.A. Ohio Problem-Solving Scholarship ($1000) open to high school seniors or college students in Ohio pursuing a college education at any two-year to five-year institution, Applicants must write a 500-1000 word essay (telling us the one thing you would change about this world if you could), and submit the application. Visit scholarship for more info. Apply by May 31.

42. Groth & Associates Scholarship ($1000): Must have a G.P.A. of 3.0+, fill out the form, attach school transcript, submit a 500-word essay about difficulties or hardships you have had to personally overcome. Apply at by June 1.

43. Mercer County Agricultural Society is awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior who is a member of a Mercer county 4-H Club, FFA, Boy or Girl Scouts. Must have a 2.0 GPA to apply. Applications due June 1.

44. Aspiring Fashion Professional Scholarship ($1000) for students that are interested in pursuing a fashion degree at an accredited post-secondary school or college. More info can be found at (at the bottom of the page). Deadline is June 1.

45. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available to undergraduate students. These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time. Interested students should call Carol Hone at 419/586-9950 for an application. Applications are due by June 1.

46. Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship ($1000): Open to seniors who: intend to pursue an animation related field at an accredited post-secondary school or college. Visit the website for more information: , and search “scholarships”. Deadline to apply is June 1.

47. Aspiring Business Professional Scholarship ($1000): Open to seniors who are interested in pursuing a business degree at any accredited post-secondary school or college.  Visit the website for more information:  and find the scholarship located at the right side. Deadline to apply is June 1.

48. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship: To apply for this $1,000 scholarship you will need to write an essay on the topic found on the website. The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited postsecondary institution who are between the ages of 16 and 30. 49. BigSun Scholarship: The BigSun Organization is offering a $500 scholarship to a student athlete. The successful applicant will be a high school senior participating in a sport OR be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution. 50. Aspiring Nurse Scholarship ($1,000): This scholarship is open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs. 51. The Ohio Pi Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity is offering six Balanced Man Scholarships ($2500) to the outstanding freshman males entering Wright State. Visit ) for details. Applications due August 30.

52. AES Engineers Scholarship ($500-open to all majors): Applicants must answer one of the essay questions from the website at . Their belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason they are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. Deadline is October 6, 2017.

53. Loans for Future Medical Students: The Medical Educational Foundation Academy of Medicine of Lima and Allen County usually offers no-interest loans to assist with tuition while students are in medical school. If interested, call Susan L. Hubbell, M.D. at (419) 226-9810.

54. Catholic Order of Foresters offers a $5000 fraternal scholarship to HS juniors and seniors. Applications will be accepted January 1 – August 31 of each year. Applicants must be individually insured COF members in good standing for at least two years prior to applying See for more information.

55. Imagine America Scholarship for 2017 graduates: FRHS can select up to three students to receive this $1000 scholarship—FRHS will award this to the first 3 eligible students who apply each year. Only recent high school graduates who are qualified applicants and who meet the following recommended guidelines should apply: Likelihood of successful completion of postsecondary education, high school grade point average of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during the senior year. Students must plan to attend a “career college” (such as Lincoln Tech or Kaplan) to be eligible. Students should visit the website for more information and a list of participating schools. 56. Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation is offering $1000-$5000 grants to individuals looking to take a continuing education course (such as welding or diesel mechanics) or attend vocational/technical college. Apply online at . Grants are awarded throughout the year.

57. Sussle Scholarship ($500): Sussle is an encyclopedia of the things YOU care about. This is not your usual scholarship. There is no application or essay, and it's actually fun. By participating, you will be posting your knowledge for the benefit of others, and in return, the best contributor will win the scholarship. Eligibility: HS seniors and college students. They are looking for outstanding students who have helped their classmates or community in a tremendous way. Maybe you started a club that raised $10,000 for charity, or championed recycling and sustainable practices across campus. 59. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current year graduates and a few for members already attending college. 60. Briarwood Village/HCF Grant-In-Aid Scholarship Program: These awards are available to applicants who has been an HCF employee for at least 1 year and have a history of above average performance appraisals. It awards financial assistance to those furthering their education as an RN, LPN, or a career in other health related fields.
