The El Niño climate event increases the temperature of the sea surface water in the South-East Pacific and suppresses upwelling of cold nutritious water. As a result the anchovy stock tends to diminish drastically when these events occur. Such were the results in 1972, 1982-83 and 1997-98 as can be seen in Figure 1. ................
