Back to Table of ContentsScopeThe Operational Guideline – Ureteric Stent Post Renal Transplant applies to nursing and medical staff under the clinical governance of the Canberra Hospital and Health Service (CHHS) Renal Network.Back to Table of ContentsKey ObjectivesTo ensure renal transplant recipients have ureteric stent removal 6 to 8 weeks post renal transplant.Back to Table of ContentsSection 1 – ProcedureRenal transplant recipient is discharged from the Transplant Hospital and returns to the ACT under the care of his/her treating Renal Consultant.Renal Transplant Nurse will receive a discharge letter from Transplant Hospital and save a copy to the renal transplant recipients Renal Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and send a copy to Medical Records.Renal Consultant will review renal transplant recipient in Renal Outpatients at Canberra Hospital. Renal Consultant will review discharge letter to confirm presence/absence of ureteric stent. In the case of:Presence or absence of ureteric stent not documented in discharge letter:Abdominal x-ray required to confirm presence or absence of ureteric stentUreteric stent removed at Transplant Hospital prior to discharge to ACT:Renal Transplant Nurse at Canberra Hospital will request a theatre report from Post Renal Transplant Nurse at Transplant Hospital Ureteric stent present:Renal Consultant will complete a referral to Urology Surgeon. Date of renal transplant surgery and details of ureteric stent to be included in the referral. Renal Transplant Nurse will document in the renal transplant recipients Renal EMR when referral has been sent, scheduled date of ureteric stent removal and when ureteric stent has been removed. Renal Transplant Nurse notifies Renal Consultant of date of removal.Renal Transplant Nurse will receive a theatre report of ureteric stent removal and save a copy to the renal transplant recipient’s Renal EMR, send a copy to Medical Records and send a copy to the Post Renal Transplant Nurse at the Transplant Hospital.Renal Transplant Nurse will generate a monthly ‘Ureteric Stent Removal’ report from Renal EMR.
