Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle SchoolPhysical Education SyllabusCoach Duncan Coach Santillan Coach Wright The Physical Education Department of Mayport Middle School would like to welcome you and acquaint you with our policies, procedures, program and expectations for the upcoming school year. UNIFORMS AND DRESSING OUT REQUIREMENTS:The following uniforms are required by grade level for each student in a Physical Education class:6th grade students: Red T-shirt and black gym shorts (shorts knee length)7th grade students: Red T-shirt and black gym shorts (shorts knee length)8th grade students: Red T-shirt and black gym shorts (shorts knee length)All uniforms are to be plain without any logo of any kind with the exception of an approved Mayport Middle School T-shirt or shorts. No buttons or zippers are permitted on the uniform. A stripe along the edge or side is accepted. Tank or sleeveless tops are NOT permitted. No hats or bandanas are to be worn. Shorts must be pulled up and worn so undergarments cannot be seen. Shorts must be knee length. The Physical Education teacher will have the final say when determining whether a student’s physical education attire is acceptable.No jewelry is to be worn in class. This includes body jewelry, necklaces, rings, watches, bracelets and hoop or dangling earrings. This can be a safety issue and sometimes results in lost or broken jewelry. Stud earrings are permitted in ears only. Students are responsible for securing their jewelry that has been removed for class.No tight fitting clothes including spandex or biker shorts are allowed, either as shorts or under gym shorts. No jean shorts or cut-offs are allowed to be worn as gym clothes.Sweat suits are recommended for cold weather and will only be accepted during cold weather. Students should check with the coaches to see if sweats are permitted on that day. Sweats as well as all gym clothes are not to be worn to school as “school clothes”, but rather changed into before class begins. Jackets must be a school color to be worn in class. The four school colors are: red, black, white, and gray.Your choice of tennis shoes with these limitations: no thick soled or platform tennis shoes, no hard street or casual shoes allowed. Shoes must have either laces or Velcro straps. Socks are required as well. NO SLIP-ON tennis shoes!An excuse note will excuse a student from participation only. The student will be expected to dress out.A parent note must accompany the student daily for up to two class days to be excused from class participation.To be excused for more than two consecutive class days requires a doctor’s statement.The gym uniform should remain locked in their assigned locker from Monday through Friday. Students are to take their gym clothes home on Friday to be washed.The student’s name should be written on the uniform with permanent marker. This helps to locate and identify lost or found clothing.An incomplete uniform will result in a loss of dressing out points.Students are not to “lend” or “borrow” gym clothes. This is not a healthy practice and too many times results in missing gym clothes. Students with dress code violations will NOT be permitted to change into their Physical Education uniform. LOCKS AND LOCKERS:The school has combination locks available for use in the locker rooms. The rental fee is $3.00. If the lock is lost, a $3.00 replacement fee must be paid. Students must use school issued locks in the locker room. NO personal store bought locks are permitted. These will be removed with lock cutters by the physical education staff.Lockers are to be kept locked at all times. Before leaving the locker room, each student should check his/her lock and belongings to make sure all is secure. Turn the dial on your lock and pull on the lock to make sure it is locked.Gym clothes must be kept overnight in the assigned small locker. Long lockers are not assigned to individuals. Long lockers are to be used only during assigned gym class. At the end of each gym class, place your gym clothes and shoes back into your assigned small locker. This clears the long lockers for use during the rest of the day by other class periods. The physical education staff will remove locks and all clothing left in long lockers. The student will be required to complete a physical activity in order to get their belongings back.Gym lockers are not book lockers! Keep school supplies with you, as you will not be permitted back into the locker room to get them.If locks are found unlocked or unsecured, the lock will be collected by the coach on duty. The student will complete a physical exercise to get his/her lock back. LOCKER ROOM:The locker room doors will close after all students have been brought to the gym by their classroom teacher. Any student that is not in the locker room at this time will be considered tardy. In order to eliminate the tardy and be able to dress out, the tardy student will be required to complete a physical exercise to be determined by the coach on duty. Failure to complete the physical exercise will result in a non-dress for the day and a tardy.The locker room will remain locked from roll call until the end of the activity portion of class is over. Hall passes from other teachers DO NOT ALLOW A STUDENT TO GO INTO THE LOCKER ROOMS DURING CLASS TIME TO GET FORGOTTEN MATERIALS! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!The locker room and gym area are NOT open to students before school, during lunch, or after school. When the doors are locked, students should not beat on the door, or jerk on door handles.Students are not permitted to use phones, cameras or other electronic devices while in locker room or PE class. Students will be warned and asked to put the device away. Failure to do so will result in the device being confiscated by one of the coaches. The device will be given to the house administrator at the coach’s earliest convenience with a referral attached for parent pick-up.Athletic locker rooms will be open after school for team members only.Any issues or problems with a lock or locker should be brought to the attention of the coach on duty in the locker room to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.ATTENDANCE: The students must be present and participate in all class assignments, exams and activities to receive points for a grade. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete any missed assignments due to absence.FIRST AID: All injuries should be reported immediately to your instructor or the coach on duty. VI. CLASS POLICIES:NO GUM, CANDY, DRINKS OR FOOD OF ANY KIND IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM.The students have five minutes after reporting to the locker room to dress out and sit on their assigned bench in the locker room.Students are to be seated in roll call order upon reporting to the gym whether they are dressed out or not.Students must remain in assigned area with the instructor during class activity. Failure to do so will be considered skipping and necessary action will be taken.Students should refrain from horseplay in the locker room, gym or outside areas.Students are expected to take care of personal and school equipment.At the end of the class period, students are to remain in the locker room until dismissal. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to develop competence in the following areas: 6th grade: Physical Fitness 7th grade: Team Sports 8th grade: Individual/Dual SportsCOURSE GOALS: The student will gain knowledge that should include, but is not limited to the following: health and safety practices, critical thinking skills, components of fitness, contributions of exercise, nutrition, and rest to fitness, skill improvement, positive participation in physical education, community resources and career opportunities. COURSE OBJECTIVES:The student will demonstrate an understanding and competence in their grade level curriculum.STUDENT BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS:Students will be expected to understand and follow the Physical Education Department CHAMPS as well as the school-wide CHAMPS. Physical Education CHAMPS are located on the gym, locker room and classroom walls for student’s easy reference.GRADING POLICY:Students are graded on a variety of components: (1) Cognitive abilities, (2) movement competency, (3) responsible behaviors and values, and (4) lifetime fitness.Students will be graded according to the Duval County grading scale.A = 90 – 100; B = 80 – 89; C = 70 – 79; D = 60 – 69; F = 0 –59.The progress reports will serve as a scholarship warning if the student is in danger of failing the course. You and your student will need to check FOCUS to follow your student’s grade in class.Grades at the end of the nine weeks will be calculated by the following method: Cognitive Abilities: 25%-written tests, self-assessments, peer-assessments, CGA’s, projects, and article reviews.Movement Competency- 25%-skills tests, performance tests, daily participation in class activities and games.Responsible Behaviors and Values- 25%-dressing out, proper use of equipment and facilities, materials and/or equipment needed for class.Lifetime Fitness- 25%- sportfolio or journal completion with reflections in place to connect activities to LF, projects relating to LF, participation in fitness testing or outside activities.PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADE RECOVERY (Thursday morning make-up):Students will be given an opportunity to make-up their non-dresses, reading log and lap log before school on Thursday mornings. The student must report to the gym no later than 8:15 prepared to dress out and walk/run the track or read. Students who arrive after 8:15 will not be permitted to participate. For students making up a non-dress, one non-dress will be eliminated from their current grade for each mile completed within the allotted 15 minutes. Students making up a lap log absence will complete as many laps as possible in 15 minutes. Students making up reading log absence must bring a book to read and a pen or pencil.
