Using a Metric Ruler



Metric Length

Length or distances are measured with a metric ruler or meter stick.

The basic metric unit for length is a meter (m)

Kilometers measure long distances like miles or the distance between cities or states

Meters measure medium-sized lengths or distances like the length of a hallway, size of a pool, distance running around a track

Centimeters measure small lengths like the length of a pencil, the size of a desk or book, the distance you can jump

Millimeters measure very small lengths like the width of a penny or pencil led, or the thickness of an eyelash

1 kilometer = 1000 meters

1 meter = 100 centimeters

1 meter = 1000 millimeters

1 centimeter = 10 millimeters

The lines in between the whole numbers are millimeters. They can also be counted as a tenth of a centimeter.
