JOHN B. CHARLES

John Charles earned his B.S. degree in biophysics at the Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics at the University of Kentucky. He went to NASA Johnson Space Center in 1983 as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow and joined NASA as a civil servant in 1985. His research into the cardiovascular effects of space flight involved him as the principal investigator on experiments that flew on many Space Shuttle flights and on the Russian space station Mir. In 1995, Dr. Charles transitioned into science management for the missions of several American astronauts aboard the Mir and for the second space flight of John Glenn in 1998. He was the NASA Mission Scientist for the STS-107 multi-disciplinary mission on the Shuttle Orbiter Columbia in January 2003. Dr. Charles was also the NASA lead for the Bioastronautics Roadmap project, a blueprint for human risk reduction through focused research and technology. He has published over 45 scientific articles, and has received NASA’s Exceptional Service Medal, the “Silver Snoopy” astronaut recognition award, and both the Hubertus Strughold Award and the Young Investigator of the Year award from the Space Medicine Branch.

Dr. Charles currently is the Assistant Director for Science Management in the Space Life Sciences Directorate, and the Deputy Program Scientist for the Human Research program, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center where he leads the planning of bioastronautics research in preparation for human space exploration beyond low Earth orbit
