Language Influence

Directions: Read the paragraph below

There were many Greek myths and legends which we still reference today. For example, we all know of the sinking of the Titanic in the early 1900s. Titan, the root of the ship’s name, comes from the Titans, a very powerful group of gods in Greek tradition. In other words, the Titanic was thought to be powerful like the Greek Gods. Others:

Ancient Greek Religion

Directions: Read the paragraph below.

Prior to the emperor Constantine, the Greeks’ neighbor, the Roman Empire, followed paganism, which had many gods. Like them, the Ancient Greeks were polytheists – believers in many gods. (Later Romans practiced Christianity, a monotheistic religion with one god.). These higher beings were the main characters in mythology, or a body of stories that try to explain how the world works. In their time, they believed gods were responsible for natural disasters and other events, which we of course know today is incorrect.

The Ancient Greek Alphabet

Directions: Read the paragraph below. No writing is required.

The Ancient Greek Alphabet was very advanced for its time. In addition to actual characters (which you see below), there were also phonetic words associated with each letter. Note that it only has 24 letters and is in a different order. In the present time, there are many uses for Greek letters, such as fraternities on college campuses. Military codes are also made using Greek letters, but usually the phonetic version of them as you will see in this table.

Search online to determine the word and letter in OUR Alphabet associated with each. The first one has been done for you. Then, figure out the closet version of your name using the Greek Alphabet and write it underneath the table.
