He will need to put down N, P2O5, and K. He will be making a dry granular mix. He has a few options when mixing his blend for nutrients. He can either apply DAP or MAP to get P2O5. He asks you which one is cheaper. The fertilizer calculator at work says MAP, however he disagrees with your excel sheet. So you write out a few calculations to show which one is cheaper. You first explain to him that DAP and MAP have both nitrogen and P2O5 which both have value. So you have to split the cost of each between nitrogen and the P2O5. You don’t know the value of the P2O5 or N so you estimate the value of one of the nutrients. To do this you find the value of N in the cheapest granular source of N – urea. This is because urea has a single nutrient so we can find the value of the nutrient. Show the calculations to find $/ pound of N in urea (2pts)You then show that you can use the price from letter (a) to estimate the value of nitrogen in one ton of DAP. Show the calculations to find the value of nitrogen in 1 ton of DAP using the value of nitrogen found in letter (a). Label answer $/ton of DAP (2pts)You then show that you can use the price from letter (a) to estimate the value of nitrogen in one ton of MAP. Show the calculations to find the value of nitrogen in 1 ton of MAP using the value of nitrogen found in letter (a). Label answer $/ton of MAP (2pts)Once we find the value of nitrogen in both fertilizers types we can subtract this from the total price of a ton of MAP or the price of a ton of DAP. Value is split in the price between nitrogen and phosphorus (P2O5). If we have an estimate of the value of nitrogen, the rest of the price is spent on phosphorus (P2O5).What is the adjusted price of a ton of DAP without the value of nitrogen found in letter b? 1 pt (Answer $/ton DAP)What is the adjusted price of a ton of MAP without the value of nitrogen found in letter c? 1 pt (Answer $/ton MAP)Once we have adjusted prices. Beet pulp, distiller’s grain, alfalfa hay, mineral/salt blocks, and hundreds of other weird and wonderful feeds. You as a human eat all kinds of material also. Some of the best include pizza, greasy burgers, and coca cola. The stuff livestock and humans eat can be analyzed and expressed in many forms. In ag math we are going to learn first about how feed nutrient and energy values are expressed. Energy and/or nutrient content of a feed may be expressed as A. Percentage, B. Quantity per unit (like the coke has 25 grams of sugar per bottle). The following are all bases and terminology used when expressing bases:Dry matter basis – dry out the feed, what is in it with no waterAs-fed basis – it has water. How you eat itAir-dry basis – assume 90% dry matter 10% waterIt is sometimes hard to compare different feeds and their nutrient compositions if one is wet and one is not. Say you drank a gallon of water with a flinestone vitamin in it or you just ate the vitamin with no water. In one situation you had over 8 pounds of liquid. That’s a lot in your stomach. The other you had almost nothing. However, you got the same vitamin. Thus, many times when we compare feeds (water-vitamin vs plain vitamin) we look at just the dry matter and what is in them. Everything is going to get converted to dry matter so we can compare apples to apples (dry matter to dry matter) and not apples to an opera (dry matter to as-fed basis). To convert as-fed to dry matter we are going to use a proportion. Proportions are easy. Everyone in this class can do them. We just have to now apply them to feeding livestock (or humans).Example Proportion: I have 100 dollars. I want to give half of it to my friend Morty. How much do I give Morty? Example: I have 90 dollars. Chance takes 33 dollars. What percent do I have left? Note: percent’s are always over 100 Feed Proportion Some practice problems:Silage is at 8% crude protein on an as-fed basis and contains 45% dry matter. What percent crude protein would the alfalfa silage contain on a dry matter basis? Some grass hay contains 12% protein on an as-fed basis and contains 85% dry matter. What percent crude protein would the alfalfa silage contain on a dry matter basis? You are going to mix a new ration for your cattle. You are looking at some charts and see beet pulp contains 10 percent protein on a dry matter basis. If the beet pulp is at 11% dry matter on an as-fed basis, what is its percent protein on the as-fed basis? You are going to mix a new ration for your cattle. You are looking at some charts and see animal blood (dehydrated) contains 21 percent protein on a dry matter basis. If the animal blood you get is at 92% dry matter on an as-fed basis, what is its percent protein on the as-fed basis? 5. Three samples of hay contain the following energy ( kcal digestible) on a dry matter basisA1000 kcal/pound30% dry matterB1200 kcal/pound35% dry matterC1175 kcal/pound39% dry matterWhat is the energy for all on an as fed basis per pound?New formula: Parts dry matter feed = Parts as-fed * % dry mater in feed (pounds, grams, weight, etc)6. How much dry matter did you feed your pigs if they were given the following:FeedWeight As-fed% Dry MatterSoybean Meal4 pounds44%Corn Silage11 pounds90% 7. Rewrite the formula from number six. We are now going to convert pounds of dry matter into as feed basis:FeedWeight Dry% Dry MatterCorn3 lbs88 %Silage10 lbs90 %Rolled Oats0.5 lbs95 %Remember the following:When going from as-fed to dry matterWeight decreasesNutrient concentration increasesWhen going from dry matter to as-fedWeight increasesNutrient concentration decreasesAnimal Science Lesson 2: Volumes & FeedsName: ____________________ If you look back you will notice that all problems so far in this unit the feed is measured in weights – such as pounds and tons. When buying certain feeds that are measured in bushels (1 bushel = 1.244 cubic feet) one must convert the volume measure of bushels to weight. This is due to the dynamic environments that filling grain encounters in real-world scenarios. Not all grain is created equal! Kernels will be different – environmental stressors may lead to more or less dry matter accumulation. This will intern change the density of a kernel. Density is equal to mass/volume. To illustrate this think of two kernels the exact same size (so they have the same volume) Kernel One - weighs 1 pound and fells like solid metal!Kernel Two - weighs 0.0001 pound and is “light as a feather”This is an extreme example, however it illustrates a real concept. Grain may be more or less dense depending how much dry matter accumulated during development. In a perfect growing year we typically get dense grain (the lead). In a stressful growing year (drought, flooding, etc.) we get less dry matter (the feather). Other factors that influence dry matter accumulation include variety/hybrid, shape of kernel, and size of the kernels. Yield is all about how much DRY MATTER (given in weight) is in a kernel of grain. A kernel has some water and some dry matter. Dry matter amount is influenced by the growing conditions and impossible to predict precisely. In feeding or grain processing the value of the kernel is in the dry matter (lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins). Test weights are a way to quantify the dry matter in a bushel of grain. Test weights are how many pounds there are per bushel. If we go back to our kernelsA bushel made of kernel One Test Weight = 80 pounds/1 bushelA bushel made of kernel One Test Weight = 40 pounds/1 bushelRemember! Weights of feed are made up of dry matter (proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) and water. Some of the pounds in the test weights above are dry matter and some is water. Because of this high test weights do not always mean high yields! Basically high test weight does not mean high dry matter. The bushel from kernel one may just be filled with water! Below is an illustration of how much test weight water adds in corn. Equating feeds based on dry matter allows up to compare how much good stuff (proteins, carbs, lipids) are in a feed. That way we can compare apples to apples Problems Using Concepts from Lesson 2 Example 1: You have two options for buying corn. Option one is 80% dry matter; costs $3.56/bushel. Option two is 87% dry matter and is $3.68/bushel. The test weight for option 1 is 61 pounds per bushel. The test weight for option 2 is 59 pounds per bushel. Which is the better buy? Why?Example 2: You have two feedstuffs you are buying. Feed one costs $85 per ton. It is 14% protein and on a 65 % dry matter. Feed two cost $120 dollars per ton. It is 10% protein and 85% dry matter. Which is a cheaper source of protein? By how much? Example 3: You can get feed protein from pre-cracked soybeans or buy soybeans and crack them yourself. You can buy pre-cracked soybeans for $10.01/bushel at 15% moisture. You can buy non-cracked soybeans for $9.80/bushel at 17% moisture. It will cost you $0.05 per bushel to crack the beans. Which is a better deal? Example 4: You have two options for protein in a feed mix. The first is alfalfa hay which costs $180/ton and is at 17% protein, and is 85% dry matter. The second is soybeans that cost $10.01/bushel and are at 35% protein, and are 80% dry matter. What is the cheapest source of protein? Animal Science Lesson 3: EnergyName: ___________________________Based on Jurgens Bregendahl Animal Feeding and NutritionWhen analyzing what is in food, there is multiple tests conducted to figure out how much of our macromolecules (fats, proteins, carbohydrates as fiber, and nitrogen free extract – stuff not fiber, fat, or protein – carbohydrates) are in the foodstuff. This is called chemical analysis. This chemical analysis will give the following % of nutrient in the feedstuff:ProteinFiber (usually from complex carbohydrates)Nitrogen-free extract (less complex carbohydrates like sugar/starch)Ether extract (fat) The chemical analysis gives us the percentage of each of these major groups in a foodstuff. Say that you are feeding alfalfa hay. You could find the following:18% protein17% fiber38 % nitrogen-free extract2.5% ether extractThese numbers refer to how much stuff (protein, fiber, etc.) is in the feed. So if I have 2000 pounds of hay I would have the following amounts of nutrients in the feed:2000 lbs x 0.18 = 360 lbs protein2000 lbs x 0.17 = 340 lbs fiber2000 lbs x .38 = 760 lbs nitrogen-free extract2000 lbs x 0.025 = 50 lbs of ether extract (fat)However, this is not what you can digest. Remember animals poop. Some stuff just doesn’t get used. This is why a value called Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) is used to estimate the amount of nutrients livestock can digest from a food product. The chemical analysis can be multiplied by digestion coefficients (how much usually is digested) to get the TDN. Ether extract (fat) has one additional step to get TDN because fat is so energy rich. The following is the TDN of our example. Highlight and note the coefficients. These will be given to you and will remain constant in this class. The following flow chart shows other energy losses. ()TDN and chemical analysis are measuring % of weight – NOT energy Energy is measured in calories. 1000 calories = 1 kcal (kilocalorie) or 1 Cal (that’s what is on food labels). 1000 kcal = 1 Mcal (megacalorie)Some important information to take away from the first part of this lessonChemical analysis (% whole) provides the breakdown of macromolecules in the food including:Fats – Ester extractHard to Digest Carbohydrates – Fiber TestProteinEasily Digested Carbohydrates – Nitrogen-free extractTDN (% whole) can be found by multiplying the chemical analysis by digestion coefficients. Fat has one additional step for calculation because it is energy rich. TDN and chemical analysis are %. The chart above shows energy – measured in caloriesGross energy is the total value of energy in the food you eatGross Energy – Fecal energy (energy passed in poop) = Digestible EnergyDigestible Energy – Energy to make urine and gas = Metabolizable energy. Metabolizable Energy is the amount of energy from food that is available forMovementThermal Regulation (keeping body at right temperature)Body Maintenance – new hair, skin, tears, mucus etc. Production Energy – bigger muscles, fat, reproduction, milkMetabolizable Energy – Thermal Regulation = Net EnergyAll organisms use energy for Maintenance and Production Know the conversion for cal = kcal = McalProblems You get the results of a chemical analysis as follows on a DRY MATTER BASIS: 25% protein15% fiber43 % nitrogen-free extract3% ether extractHow much of each macromolecule do you have in 1 ton of alfalfa hay? This ragweed may be resistant to glyphosate (roundup) so you are going to spray some herbicide with the active ingredient imazethapyr to smoke it. You have two options. First is to spray extreme and maybe add some roundup or pursuit to the mixture if needed. The second is to make a tank mixture of pursuit (imazethapyr) and roundup power max (glyphosate). You want to apply a high rate of 3oz of pursuit per acre. You also want to apply 32 oz of roundup power max per acre. You know you need this much pursuit for the ragweed. You now will compare options. What is the cost in $/unit of pursuit and roundup power max? How much will it cost per acre to apply the above rates of pursuit and round up power max? Using the attached pursuit and power max labels. How many pounds of active ingredient are there for each herbicide? How much active ingredient are you applying per acre with your given rate? How does this compare to the price of just a pure pursuit and roundup powermax mixture? You are spraying wheat and are applying an herbicide to kill broadleaves. You are going to use two group four herbicides. You scout your field and find a wild buckwheat, wormwood, kochia, dandelion, and a few nightshades. You see that widematch herbicide will control these weeds well. You know that widematch is a mix of two active ingredients- fluroxypyr and clopyralid. You know you can get the same effects as widematch from starane (fluroxypyr) and stinger (clopyralid). You have two options. First is to spray widematch and maybe add some stinger and starane to the mixture. The second is to make a tank mixture of stinger and starane. You want to apply a high rate of starane to kill any kochia that may be resist. You will apply 0.54 pts/acre. You also do not think you need as much stinger, so you can apply it at a rate of 2.6 oz per acre. How much does it cost to apply stinger and starane? This waterhemp is resistant to glyphosate (roundup) so you are going to spray some herbicide with the active ingredient sulfentrazone before your soybeans emerge since it has a long residual and will keep waterhemp from emerging for a long time. You have two options for your pre-emergence spraying. First is to spray Spartan elite and maybe add some extra metolachlor or sulfentrazone. The second is to make a tank mixture of pursuit metolachlor and sulfentrazone by mixing Dual Magnum and Spartan. You want to apply a rate of 1.33 pts/acre of Dual magnum and 6 oz/acre of Spartan.
