Math in Agriculture

Use simple math to answer the questions. Be sure to show your work and use correct units.

1) If you have 40 cows in a pasture and one bag of grain feeds 8 head of cattle for a day, how many bags of feed do you need to take with you to the field each day?

2) You need to lay sod in a yard that is 200 feet long and 50 feet wide. How many square feet of sod do you need to order to cover the space?

3) In preparation to fence a rectangular pasture, you measure the sides and find that the pasture is 350 feet long and 300 feet wide. How many feet of fencing material do you need to buy to fence the pasture?

4) You decide to borrow some money to purchase a new tractor. The initial price is $24,000. You have $5,000 saved up for a down payment. If you borrow the remaining amount at an annual interest rate of 6%, how much interest will you expect to pay during the first year?

5) If it takes two tons of alfalfa to feed a mother cow for the winter and you need to feed 120 cows through the winter, how many tons of hay do you need to put up in the summer to make sure your cows don’t starve?

6) You have just bought a small rectangular field. You know that it is five acres in size and that one acre is 43,560 square feet. You measure the rectangular field on one side and discover that it is 330 feet long. How many feet wide is the field?

7) When preparing to spray a field for weeds, you read the herbicide label to learn that control of the problem weed requires 1 pint of the chemical per acre to be sprayed. You are going to spray 40 acres and thus need 40 pints of the product. Knowing there are 2 pints to a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon, how many gallons of herbicide do you need?

8) After considering the cost of the herbicide in question 7, you decide to use a different, more concentrated herbicide that only calls for 6 ounces per acre. You still need to spray 40 acres. You go to the store and find that the herbicide is sold in 0.5 liter bottles. You ask Google how many mL are in an ounce and you find that there are 30 mL in 1 liquid ounce. You know there are 1000 mL per liter. How many half-liter bottles should you buy to spray the field?

9) Your veterinarian recommends that you feed your show hog 2 percent of its body weight, twice a day in concentrated grain. Your hog currently weighs 175 lbs. If feed is sold in 50 lb bags, how many bags do you need each week?

10) While planting grain, you decide to check the accuracy of your planter. The drill plants rows six inches apart. One acre is 43560 square feet and you gather the seed metered to one row for 100 feet. You weigh the collected seed and it weighs 1.5 ounces. Knowing that 16 ounces make a pound, how many pounds per acre is the drill planting?
