After the Civil War the racial question was still not settled, and many states enacted Jim Crow segregation laws. Again the Supreme Court upheld the so-called separate but equal philosophy in its Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896. More than half a century later the Plessy decision was overturned in Brown v.
