Residential Village Weekends Health Protocols 2020-2021

Concordia Language Villages

Just like other academic programs, Concordia Language Village Weekends will look different in 2021. While we work with our language learning communities to ensure the health and safety of villagers and staff, we continue to be committed to providing a rich experience that our participants have come to know and treasure.

Changes to our program are based on Minnesota Department of Health guidelines for camps, youth programming and schools. In addition, we will follow COVIDenhanced guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Camp Association.

Participation requirements: In order to ensure quality programming while adhering to MDH and CDC health guidelines, we will be required to register a minimum of 40 participant spots (with 10 accompanying chaperone-teachers). Allowable originating locales and maximum number of participants will be determined by Language Village in conjunction with CLV Health Services.

Along with the enhanced hygiene measures you use in your schools and classrooms, participants and staff will be required to wear face coverings or face shields and maintain 6 feet distance to the extent possible in indoor settings. Though participants may remove their facial coverings to eat and sleep, they will remain spatially distanced. To ensure proper distancing practices, we will use a small cohort model used in many educational settings.

Small groups or cohorts: We ask that each school community create cohorts with a maximum of ten members (8 students and 2 chaperone-teachers). To the extent possible, we'd like to see participants maintain any existing cohorting. Cohorts will remain together for the duration of the weekend, including housing, lessons, activities and meals.

Members of a cohort will share sleeping quarters. Participants will sleep with at least 6 feet of distance between them, without masks. Sleeping arrangements will be oriented to maximize distance between participants' heads.

Bathrooms will be assigned per cohort (within cabins) and participants will consistently use only their assigned bathroom. To further reduce risk, custodial services will not enter a cohort's bathroom during their stay. Safe and effective cleaning and disinfecting supplies will be provided to allow this to be managed by the cohort itself with a suggested schedule. Showers and bathroom breaks will be staggered to prevent overcrowding in bathrooms.

Larger group gatherings: For the majority of the time each cohort will function separately and will not intermingle with members of other cohorts during their stay. Exceptions to this may occur when two cohorts share a dining area that has an appropriate amount of space to maintain 6-foot distances.

We will continue to relish the many outdoor opportunities provided by the Turtle River Lake site and we will adjust the program to spend as much time as possible outside. In outdoor settings, larger groups of up to 25 may come together provided appropriate spatial distancing is maintained (and masks worn if necessary).

Transportation: Transportation to and from Turtle River Lake will be in accordance with the current MDH transportation guidelines for schools (MDH Planning Guide for Schools), and will be arranged by the originating school districts. We will share contact information of our partners in bussing from typical years.

Exclusion from programming: Participants should not attend and will be required to leave if:

They have been diagnosed with or are awaiting test results for COVID-19. They had close contact (together for at least 15 minutes without masks) within 14 days of arrival with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. They have any of the following more common symptoms: fever greater than or equal to 100.4 F, new onset and/or worsening cough, difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell. They have any two of the following less common symptoms: sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, muscle pain, excessive fatigue, new onset of severe headache, new onset of nasal congestion or runny nose.

Health Screenings: As in the past year, school groups will continue to choose and provide their own chaperones and designated adults to oversee the administration of prescription and over-the-counter medications and to provide for participants' health care needs. Concordia Language Villages will continue to require a Special Accommodations Form to collect information on participants' allergies, nutritional information and additional concerns. Along with the Special Accommodations form, a specific Covid pre-screening form will be collected from all participants.

We know this is a lot of information and that some of the guidelines may seem strict. However, we remain committed to the health and safety of our staff and participants and ask for your cooperation in adhering to these changes.
