To: NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Programs, March 25, 2020

Based on Questions from several Approved Programs, the NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Committee has set the follow guidelines for Programs and students completing their Veterinary Assistant Training at NAVTA AVA programs.

1. Since many secondary schools and post-secondary institutions were forced to close to the public and students in the past few weeks, the AVA committee is allowing these closed schools to complete their curriculum in a distance education format as necessary. This allowance will be granted through the end of the school year in June, 2020 for secondary schools and through July 1, 2020 for post-secondary institutions.

2. Students who were removed from extern sites or clinical experience prematurely will be allowed to be considered with all hours completed and all students who have completed coursework, but yet to start their externship or clinical education will be allowed to be considered complete in their clinical experience if the following provision is met:

Instructors/ Lab/ Competency Supervisors assurance that these students have gained experience during class labs or clinical experiences & are competent as beginner level Vet Assistants in the following AVA skills:

I.II. Office Procedures and Communications:

A. Professional communication with staff and clients

B. Demonstrate knowledge of basic sanitation of a veterinary clinic, exam rooms, and cages

III. Pharmacy and Pharmacology:

A. Reconstitute vaccines and understand restraint for vaccination of small animals.

IV. Exam Room Procedures

A. Restrain Small Animals on tables, floor; standing, sitting, lateral, sternal and dorsal positions.

B. Determine and record temperature, pulse, respiration, CRT, normal Mucous Membrane

color and obtain weight of patient.

C. Trim small animal nails, clean external ears, and exam room grooming

V. Small Animal Nursing

A. Demonstrate knowledge of small animal breeds and recognize abnormal or threatening behaviors

B. Perform hand-pilling and oral medication administration to small animals

C. Perform bathing of small animals

VI. Surgical Preparation and Assisting

A. Preparing gowns, towels, drapes, and instruments into packs for sterilization

B. Understand the assistance to the DVM or Veterinary Technician in preparation of patients for

surgery (site prep)

VII. Laboratory Procedures

A. Collect voided urine samples and collect voided fecal samples

B. Restrain small animals for venipuncture from various sites and identify common blood tubes

C. Identify external parasites such as mites, lice, fleas, and ticks

VIII. Radiology Procedures

A. Understand radiology safety and be able to don PPE in the radiology room

B. Assist the DVM or Veterinary Technician in positioning of small animal patients for X-Rays

These skills represent the absolute minimum requirements for a beginner level Veterinary Assistant. These provisions and allowances will be in effect through July 1, 2020. Following that date all NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Programs are expected to return to normal competency and externship/ clinical experience requirements.

Students who have completed coursework and the above requirements will be considered graduated and based upon recommendation by their programs, will be allowed to sit for the NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Examination.
