Haviland Pool

FAQQ1: HELP! My pool is green!A:?First, that's not a question. Second, green pool water is the most common pool owner question, so you're not alone. Here's the basics:Chlorination - Filtration - CirculationYou need to kill what's green.. and kill it all. Super chlorinate the water with as much as?chlorine powder?per 15,000 gallons pool water as needed to kill all of the 'yuck' in the pool water. It’s hard to know how much of the 'yuck' is in the water, but you don't want any of it to survive, so overdosing is better than underdoing.?The chlorine will kill the yuck, but the filter will do the heavy lifting. Make sure you filter is clean, and in good working order. You'll need to backwash and/or clean a few times during this process. The water needs to be moving to get the chemicals into the corners, and sweep up the dead and living debris. Make sure your returns are pointed in the right direction to create great water flow.?Once the water is clean, it may still be a little cloudy, but its time to bring a sample of the water into your pool store and follow their recommendations to get the water back in balance.Q2: HELP! My pool is green! Are there any other ways to fix it?A:?Option 2. Similar to answer above, but instead of Filtration and Circulation, you can use a flocculent (Super Fall Out) to drop the killed algae to the bottom of the pool after adding a significant dosage of chlorine. After you add the flocculent (floc), you will need to vacuum the debris from the bottom of the pool. This step is easy, except the material is 'fluffy', so its kind of tricky. You'll be able to vacuum a little at a time, but you'll also stir up the rest, and you're pool will look completely cloudy. Don't worry, the debris will fall to the bottom again after 30 - 60?minutes. Repeat process a few times. After about 48 hours, the floc will not be nearly as effective in resettling debris, so you may have to add another dose.?Q3: What does my salt cell generator generate?A:?Your salt cell generator uses electrical current to transform salt water into liquid chlorine.. bleach. (Technically, it generates the bacteria-killing form of bleach and dry chlorine:?hypochlorous acid with carbon dioxide as a byproduct.) Your salt pool is a chlorine pool that also contains salt waiting to be converted to chlorine.?Q4: Is a salt pool easier to maintain than a pool using chlorine?A:?Yes and no. A salt cell generator is a convenient and safe way to add sanitizer to the water. A few bags of salt and a convenient button makes adding sanitizer easy. Conversely, salt cell generators increase pH due to the chemical reaction. High pH, and pH flocculation can lead to scaling, stains or worse. Salt water is also naturally aggressive towards metals, liners and equipment. Salt water feels smooth on your skin, but there's a reason ships rust when they're in the ocean. Salt cells do wear out over time, with typical factory warranties lasting 36 - 48 months.?Q5: I've had a salt pool for a few years, but suddenly there's hard, white crystals sitting at the bottom of my pool... and the problem is getting worse. What's going on?A:?Salt cell generators create a chemical reaction with salt and water to create chlorine. During this chemical reaction, byproducts are formed including calcium deposits which naturally form on the cell walls. This calcium deposit is so common, salt cell manufacturers make tools to routinely scrape calcium from cell walls. Calcium on its own is a nuisance, but its manageable. When pool water also contains high levels of phosphates (introduced by airborne fertilizers, municipal water or even some pool chemicals), your salt cell creates a nasty byproduct called Calcium Phosphate. To prevent this jagged crystal product from forming, first remove as much phosphate from the water as possible using? HYPERLINK "" PhosAway. Keeping phosphates low is a must for any pool. The second step to avoiding this almost insoluble scale?is to add a regular maintenance dose of?Rust-N-Scale Preventer. This product keeps metals at bay and to prevent scale, stains and events reduces a cause of cloudy water.Q6: My pH decreaser container looks half full? What kinda scam are you guys trying to pull over there?A:??We package a variety of products into the same containers, and we package them by weight. If you were to measure 1 pound of cotton balls and 1 bound of pennies, they would weigh the same, but the cotton balls would take up a lot more space. We do our best to ensure each bottle is filled to the written weight + 5 - 10% overage. Some heavier products like?pH Down?are heavy, and take up less space in the bottle. Its kinda like a half-full bag of tortilla chips.. except our products should not be dipped into guacamole.?Q7: I love your products, but I can't find a dealer in my area. What's a loyal pool customer to do?A:?Firstly, Thank You! Second, try using our?dealer locator?tool. We have dealers all over the country.?Still no luck? We manufacture 8 brands of chemicals. There may be a dealer in your area that carries a similar product in one of our other brands. You live 500 miles from society and none of the previous options work? Many of our retailers sell our products through on-line stores. That's not the best way to get the level of expertise our products deserve, but at least your pool water looks nice.Q8: I've heard a lot about borates. Are they a good option for my pool?A: Yes.A: Yes. Yes, they are.?A: Borates improve the quality of your pool's water regardless of the type of sanitizer used. Borates like?Activator Plus?act as a secondary buffer to better control water balance, and proper water balance (pH, Alkalinity, Calcium) is the most important step to maintaining proper water chemistry. Borates prevent stains and scale, improve the feel of water, reduce eye and skin irritation, and gives water an amazing sparkle. Borates are ideal for salt pools. They help defend against some of the negative issues that naturally occur during the operation of salt pools.?See Q3 - Q5 above.? ................
