UNIT EIGHT TASK: “Three Little Pig Builders”

Three Little Pigs: Builders Edition Name: _________________________

After the debacle with the Big Bad Wolf, the 3 little pigs are back in business. The debate about building materials has been settled, but the pigs have found something else to argue about. The pig brothers formed the Three Little Pig Building Company and have gone into the home building business each pig with a house plan shown below.

Part 1: Back in Business

Part 2: Show me the Money

The little pigs have determined that House 1 will cost $30,000 to build based on the volume of the house. Help the pigs determine the cost to build House 2 and 3, if the cost of the house is proportional to the houses volume.

House 1: 30, 000 = Cost per cubic foot = ________________

Part 3: Home Sweet Home

After all the hard work you’ve done, the pigs reward you by giving you the house of your choice, but before you can move in you must paint the walls and the ceiling and put in flooring. Use the information below to figure out the cost.

Paint:

Each home has a 3 ft. by 5 ft. door and two 2 ft. by 2 ft. windows that do not need painting. All of the walls need paint including the ceilings. A gallon of paint costs $25 and covers 300 ft2.

Determine how many gallons of paint you will need and how much that will cost. Paint comes in ¼, ½, ¾, and 1 gallon cans. Make sure to only buy enough to cover the area that needs paint. You don’t want to waste money!

*Remember to subtract the area of the windows, door and the floor of your house.

Fill in the table to help you calculate the area you will need to paint.

|House Plan |Total Surface Area |Area of the floor |Area of the windows and door |

| | | | |

Subtract the area of the floor and the area of the windows and doors to find the area that needs paint. Area that needs paint = __________________ ft. ²

Divide the area by 300 to determine how much paint you will need. Then find the cost of the paint.

Number of galloons needed = ______________ Cost of paint = ___________

You have a choice of hard wood floors or carpet for your house. Cost includes installation. Carpet costs $5.25 per square foot. Hard work floors cost $8.15 per square foot. Fill in the table to calculate the cost of flooring for your new house.

|Area of the floor |Type of flooring |Cost per square foot |Total cost of flooring |

Part 4: You’re on Your Own!

After your work with the pigs you decide to go into business for yourself. Choose one of the activities below to help you get started.

Builder: Design your own house plan using a geometric shape. Draw your design and include all the measurements in feet. Draw a table and calculate the volume and surface area of your new house. Make sure to show your work. Earn 10 bonus points by making your design a composite figure.

Interior Designer: Choose one of the pig’s house plans and draw a cross-section parallel to the base to show how you would divide the house into rooms and arrange furniture in the house. Use graph paper to make your floor plan to scale. Make sure to include several pieces of furniture, to label and color your design. Earn 10 points bonus by adding a second floor to the house and drawing a cross-section that is perpendicular to the base. Add furniture and label it, to show the first and second floor from a new perspective.

Real Estate Agent: Choose one of the pigs houses and make a for sale poster for the house. Include a picture and price for the home. Make sure to increase the selling price from the cost of building. Include the volume and surface area and other selling point that would make a home buyer want to buy this home. Your poster should persuade a buyer that this house is the one for them! Earn 10 bonus points by making an ad for a painter or flooring Installation Company. Include how much they charge for their services.

Reporter: Write an article for a local newspaper, telling about the little pigs new business. Compare and contrast the volume and surface area for all three house plans and the options for paint and flooring. Explain the formulas used to calculate volume and how the surface area was determined for each house. Give pros and cons for each house plan for would be buyers. Earn 10 bonus points by including in your article an interview with one of the pig brothers asking him several questions about the new business.

Author: Write and illustrate a new storybook about what happened to the pig brothers after the Big Bad Wolf incident and how they decided to form the Little Pig Building Company. Be sure to include a conflict about the house plans since we know this is what the pigs disagreed upon this time. You may include the big bad wolf or introduce a new villain. Earn 10 bonus points by including volume and surface area into your story.

This project will be graded according to the rubric on the back of this paper. Be sure to review the rubric before turning in the project. Double check all mathematical calculations and attach part 4 to this page before turning it in.

We all know what happened last time the pigs tried to build houses without any help. You have been hired to help the pigs get their new business off to a good start. Below is your job description.

1. Give a geometric name to each house so the house plans don’t get mixed up.

2. Find the volume for each house so home buyers will know how much room they will have inside each house.

3. Find the total surface area of each house. The new houses will need paint and flooring.

Complete the tables below so home buyers will be able to easily compare the 3 house plans.
