OVULATION INDUCTION: CLOMIFENEYour infertility investigations have shown that you have a problem with producing eggs (ovulation) and thatyou might benefit from treatment with Clomifene Citrate in an attempt to help you conceive.What does clomifene do?Clomifene tablets increase the level of hormones which lead to the production and release of eggs.What can I do to help myself?WeightThis treatment is most effective when you are neither overweight nor underweight, BMI under 30. If your weight is out with this we may defer treatment.Folic AcidThe Department of Health recommends that all women who are actively planning a pregnancy take a400 microgram tablet of folic acid daily, this is to reduce the risk of spina bifida. These tablets are readilyavailable over the counter at any pharmacy.Healthy LifestyleWe follow the Scottish Government Eligibility for NHS Fertility treatment and consequently will not offer treatment if you smoke. Think about how much you drink and cut downTaking the tabletsIt is normal to start Clomifene on the second day of your period. The dose will be one tablet (50mg) daily from Day 2 of your cycle until Day 6. Sometimes we will increase the dose but do not do this without instruction.If you seldom have periods, it is important first to be sure that you are not pregnant. We will then give you a5 day course of progesterone tablets, which should give you a period within the next week. You then startthe Clomifene tablets on Day 2 of the bleeding.Day 2 or soon afterPhone 01463 704349 Monday to Friday to arrange a scan for day 12. This scan is done vaginally.Day 12Ultrasound Scan of your Ovaries in your first cycle. It is essential to avoid intercourse for 48 hours before your day 12 scan. This is in case you have produced too many follicles, which could lead to the risk of multiple pregnancy. If too many follicles have been produced we will decrease the dose and repeat the scan in your next cycle.When do I have intercourse?Having intercourse on alternate days during your fertile period gives you the best chance of becomingpregnant.We will discuss with you both the best time for you to have intercourse.Blood test around day 21This must be done in EVERY CYCLE and can be done with the practice nurse.If your next period comes by Day 35, start taking Clomifene again on Day 2. If you have not had a period byDay 35, you may need to have a pregnancy test performed and if you are not pregnant, you may requirefurther tablets to induce another period.Possible side - effects.Multiple pregnancy – 6% risk, occasionally “hot flushes” may occur, very occasional blurring of vision.Headaches, breast tenderness and enlargement of ovaries with some abdominal pain have been reported.If you have any concerns please feel free to discuss them with us.Please let us know if you have any questions about taking these tablets on 01463 706248.
