National 5 English: RUAE Revision

Understanding Questions (own words)There are two types of Understanding questions:In your own words…Identify…If you quote in an own words/ identify question you will score zero. The number of marks the question is worth tells you how many bullet points to include. For example, 2 marks would be two bullet points. Analysis questions (explain a quotation and comment on its effect)These questions will look like this:By referring to…With close reference to the text…Analyse how…You MUST quote and explain the quote to gain marks in these questions. You know how many quotes to include by dividing the number of marks in half. For example, if it’s worth 4 marks you explain 2 quotes. I recommend using the following formula to maximise your marks:For word choice, or imagery this approach-QUOTE/ Explain actual meaning of words quoted/ Explain why the writer has used these words/ Answer the question. For sentence structure use this approach-NAME PUNCTUATION/ Name information included around the structure or punctuation/ Explain why the writer has used these words/ Answer the question.Tone questions should be treated as sentence structure.Contrast questions always require two quotes to comment on both points.Link question requires link back (what had been discussed), then quote linking phrase/ then link forward (what is discussed next). You end by explaining if the linking phrase added to or changed the direction of the writer’s argument. Evaluation questions (follow the same structure as analysis questions)Unlike analysis questions, evaluation questions ask you to look at a large section of the passage. They will look like this: How effective do you find this title as an introduction to the piece? (4 marks) How effective do you find the opening paragraph as an introduction to the piece? (4 marks)How effective do you find the conclusion as a finale to the piece? (4 marks)How effective do you find the tone of the article in conveying the theme of the piece? (4 marks)The best way to revise for RUAE is to get stuck in! Please see RUAE homework sheet for further ideas to revise. Good luck! ................
