Weekly Overview

Week Two

Overview

Analysis is a powerful tool to assess application of prior knowledge and review what you have done over the course of your program. This week you will analyze the data provided to make a recommendation for locating an urgent care center and create a SWOT analysis of the important characteristics of a hospital that would be used in defining and establishing a new health care service.

Week Two focuses on using market and demographic data to determine where an urgent care center is best located. You should consider proximity to the main hospital system, where the best services would meet the needs of the patient, and where you would likely see the most need for service.

You also will analyze data provided in a scenario regarding a hospital to determine what you believe are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the hospital, especially in relation to establishing a new urgent care center.

What you will cover

1. Market Analysis

a. Analyze demographic market data to form a business decision.

1) Demographic data for a region is used to support marketing decisions

2) Data such as age, economic status, and primary employers and payers for a region are market factors for determining which health care services would be appropriate

b. Examine strategic options related to locating a new health care service.

1) Health care managers make decisions on whether to lease, buy, or build facilities to provide services based on such factors as longevity of the service, financial feasibility, and cash flow

2) Two location options will be given along with demographic data. The student will select one option and provide their rationale for their decision.
