William Fleming Athletic Hall of Fame Criteria

1. Membership in the William Fleming High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be granted to those who meet the following criteria:

• The individual has distinguished themselves and brought honor to William Fleming High School for their outstanding participation in the athletic program.

• The individual has continued, after graduation, to distinguish themselves and has brought honor to their community through outstanding athletic achievement, or service to athletic programs.

• The individual possesses exemplar character, courage and leadership that William Fleming High School continues to foster in its athletes.

• The nominee must have and exemplify high standards, moral character, and integrity and be respected and held in high esteem by peers and the community in which he/she lives

2. The Hall of Fame will recognize outstanding athletes, coaches, and significant contributors, which would allow us to include worthy booster club members, parent volunteers, team doctors, and other individuals who contributed significantly to the athletic program.

• Athletes – student-athletes who have graduated from William Fleming High School and have made a significant contribution to the school. Selection shall be based upon playing ability (all-district, all-region, or all-state honors, all-time leading scorer, winning a state championship, etc), leadership, character, integrity, and sportsmanship to their team and school. Athletes are eligible 10 years after graduating from William Fleming High School.

• Coaches - eligibility is based upon a high degree of competency and success. Candidates must have contributed toward promoting sound educational values in their student-athletes, including graduating their athletes and ensuring their acceptance into a college or university. Coaches are eligible for induction five (5) years after leaving coaching in Roanoke City Public Schools.

• Contributors – individuals who have made outstanding contributions to William Fleming High School interscholastic athletic program.

3. The completed forms should ONLY be sent to the current Athletic Director who will keep them on file.

4. The Athletic Hall of Fame will have a maximum of ten (10) inductees the first year. Every year after that there will be a maximum of five (5) per year. Applications should be kept on file for five years.

5. All nominations will be reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee by May 15 of each year leaving ample time to order the plaques for the inductees. William Fleming’s induction ceremony will occur at a home basketball or football game.

• Nominations may be made by any individual except standing members of the William Fleming High School Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

• All nominations must be made on official William Fleming High School Athletic Hall of Fame nomination forms.

6. The William Fleming High School Standing Hall of Fame Committee will be in charge of creating and maintaining the hall of fame.

7. Yearly timetable of HOF should look something like this:

• distribute nomination forms year round

• collection information on nominees year round

• deadline for nominations March 1

• Hall of Fame selection committee meets in March

• select and inform Hall of Fame Recipients June

• complete information for plaque and media August

• order plaques and awards August

• announce award winners to the media September

• awards presentation home athletic event (Football/Basketball)

8. The Selection Committee will consist of a maximum of nine members. The selection committee members must be present at the selection meeting to discuss and vote on potential Athletic Hall of Fame nominees. Nominees must receive a unanimous vote to be included in the Hall of Fame.

9. Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will be non-elected and as follows: Hall of Fame Chair Person, Athletic Director, Principal or another administrator, Athletic Booster Club President/member, Current Head Coach of a sport at William Fleming, four members at large.

• The William Fleming High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee shall vote on the final approval of candidates.

• A majority vote of the board members present at the time of the introduction of each candidate must be required.

• At any selection vote, at least seven (7) Committee Members shall be present.

• The William Fleming High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee shall take into consideration eras of time periods in appointing members to the selection committee.

• The committee will all assist in the verification and research of finalists’ applications.
