Topical Outline

Introduction

Good morning. I am Lieutenant Grant Pierre of the St. John Parish Police Department. Today, we will begin an activity that will help you build a very important quality that all individuals should have if they want to become successful in their life’s endeavor. That quality is trustworthiness. Listen to this little scenario.

Sample Scenario

Jason Conner is a sophomore at Purduga High School in Wallgate, Alabama. He’s always called to the principal’s office for some reason or another. Jason always wondered why no one at his school seems to trust him.

Little did he know that the things he did and said caused people to have these feelings about him. For instance, one day his teacher, Mrs. Brown lost her purse. Jason found the purse, but rather than return it, he took the money out of it and threw the purse into the garbage bin. He did not realize that another student, Charlie Simmons, had spotted him rummaging through the purse. When called into the assistant principal’s office, he continued to deny the fact that he had the purse until it was taken out of the bin and brought to the office. He then admitted that he had found the purse and gave the money back.

Another instance found Jason cheating on his math exam. When approached by his teacher, Jason tried to hide the cheat sheet under the desk of his best friend. At another time Jason borrowed his best friend’s calculator. He kept it for a couple of months and when his friend asked for the calculator, Jason pretended he had returned it to him. These are just a few of the instances in which Jason showed that he could not be trusted. He was not an honest person. If you want someone to trust you, one of the most important qualities you must possess is honesty.

II. Body

Today, we will examine what I consider to be the top ten characteristics that a trustworthy person should possess . (Pass out handouts)

On the sheet you will find the top ten tips for building trustworthiness. You will be divided into cooperative learning groups. Each group will randomly choose one of the top ten tips. Working together, write a short scenario depicting how your quality is important in building trustworthiness. Then, create a banner showing how that quality can be developed.

(Students will work on their projects, then present to the class; highlighting those characteristics they identify for each of the top ten tips).

III. Conclusion

The results of these activities clearly show the importance of following these top ten tips for building trustworthiness. It is important to have that quality of trustworthiness if one hopes to become a success in life.
