BELIEVE IN GOD

NARRATOR: (Opening line about Brick City and its inhabitants. SAM B. LEAVE enters on introductory cue.)

SAM B. LEAVE: Yup. This is a good city for me alright. I don’t see a single tree anywhere.

(LILA enters)

LILA: Hey, what’s in that sack?

SAM: Seeds.

LILA: I’ve never heard of seeds before; can I see one?

SAM: Sure (he pretends to take one out of his sack and show it to her)

LILA: It looks kind of small to me. What do seeds do?

SAM: They grow into trees.

LILA: What’s a tree?

SAM: This is a tree (he gives her a picture of a large tree).

LILA: Wow! Let me see that seed thing again (she laughs when she sees how small it is compared to the tree). Hey, Anna, Sheila! Come here for a minute.

(ANNA and SHEILA enter)

LILA: Want a good laugh?

ANNA: Sure.

LILA: This guy has tiny little seeds that he says will grow into huge trees like in this picture (ALL laugh).

SHEILA: What’s your name anyway?

SAM: Sam B. Leave.

LILA: What does the “B” stand for?

SAM: I really don’t know. I’ve just always been called Sam B. Leave for as long as I can remember.

SHEILA: You know what I think? I think Sam is really a clown. Aren’t you, Sam?

SAM: No, I’m not. I’m not a clown.

SHEILA: Well, you’re just a funny as a clown! (ALL laugh again as they start to exit toward the hall door)

SAM: Wait a minute! Meet me here tomorrow and you’ll see.

ANNA: Okay, Sam.

(ANNA, SHEILA, and LILA exit out the hall door. SAM exits into the puppet booth)

NARRATOR: The next day they returned to see what happened to the little seed.

(ANNA, SHEILA, and LILA enter through the hall door. SAM enters through the puppet booth.)

SAM: (holding a metal pan with a pretend seed inside) Look! The seed is growing!

LILA: (looking into the pan) Well, it does have a little tail on it. What do you think, Anna?

ANNA: I don’t think it will ever turn into a tree.

(ALL exit the same way as before)

NARRATOR: But as the days went by, the tree continued to grow.

(ALL enter the same way. SAM enters with the tree and the watering can.)

SHEILA: Look! That seed is really growing tall!

SAM: I told you.

NARRATOR: Day after day, as Sam watered it, the little tree continued to grow . . .

(SAM pretends to water it a little bit, and then pulls it up a little bit taller as the girls look on)

NARRATOR: And grow . . .

(SAM pulls it up taller)

NARRATOR: And grow . . .

(SAM pulls it up taller)

NARRATOR: And grow!

(SAM pulls it up as high as it can go)

LILA: Wow! I want some seeds so I can grow some trees at my house.

ANNA: Me too!

SHEILA: Me too!

SAM: (pretends to pass out some of his seeds) Here you go! Don’t forget to water those seeds.

(ANNA, SHEILA, and LILA each hold out a hand to accept a pretend seed. They smile as they look at the pretend seeds and dream of many trees to come.)

NARRATOR: And soon the whole town of Brick City was covered with trees. After a while, the people decided to change the name of their town to Tree City, because there were so many trees in their city. And it all started with a special visitor.
