BREAKING GENERATIONAL CURSES

Breaking Generational Curses

By David Spriggs

I. TWO TYPES OF CURSES IN SCRIPTURE

A. Curses brought about by the spoken word

B. Curses brought about by acts of sin and disobedience

C. This second type is because the person being cursed is in direct violation of God’s word. Therefore, all curses are a result of abusing the word.

“But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee” Deuteronomy 28:15

D. The believer is released from all curses through Christ:

“13Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” –Galatians 3:13, 14

E. If a believer is in bondage to anything it is because that believer has freely accepted the curse or refuses to repent because of the action that caused the curse.

F. Habits and hereditary conditions are a result of accepting the related curse.

G. The dictionary defines a curse as:

“To speak evil against someone or thing; to cause hurt or evil to come upon someone”

II. What is a Generational Curse?

A. All curses, if left unresolved, transcend generations.

1. They are passed on by demonic spirits allowed to attach themselves to the family

2. The affect of these spirits are seen or manifested in the physical world by common or uncommon maladies

3. Someone miss-spoke words that established curses. These words were spoken out of ignorance, foolishness or sin.

B. They can be carried over to the third or fourth generation

“Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.” —Exodus 34:7

III. What is a Generation?

A. The first generation was a thousand years

“8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” –2 Peter 3:8

B. This was established by Adam’s original sin.

“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” –Genesis 2:17

C. Adam died before the first generation was complete. He lived 930 years

“And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.” –Genesis 5:5

D. Therefore, a generation is a day of years

E. Abraham’s generation was 175 years

“And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.” –Genesis 23:7

F. David’s generation was 70 years

“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” –Psalm 90:10

G. Anyone who lived beyond threescore and ten years was blessed

H. Today a generation is 52 years

I. This generation is maintained by the advent of pharmaceutical drugs

1. It is believed that without drugs a person would only live to be 35 or 40 years old

2. This is true because of the deadly environment that we live in

3. Processed foods, air and water pollution, and a myriad of other things contribute to the lose of longevity

4. If left alone, the years of man are declining away because of sin

J. If we take the most recent tally for a generation and multiply it by four we get the following results:

1. 52x4=208 years

2. David’s generation: 70x4=280 years

3. Abraham’s generation: 175x4=700 years

4. Adam’s generation: 1000x4=4000 years

5. These are staggering numbers in relation to how long a curse may be in vogue

K. Thus a generational curse can be carried over for 208 years or more based on Exodus 34:7

L. A curse may be renewed by a person’s speech

“8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God” –James 3:8, 9

M. Speech establishes the order of events in the physical world.

1. God established the order of the universe by speaking it into existence

“1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” –John 1:1-4

2. We are His children and therefore have His attributes

3. Our speech is creative in the same manner as our Father.

“12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” –John 1:12, 13

“26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” –Genesis 1:26, 27

4. God created man in His image, after His likeness. That is, with His appearance and His similitude

5. We, as His creation, have His attributes or likenesses.

(a) We see that we are created after His image because we are triune after His nature.

(1) He is Father, Son, Holy Ghost.

(2) We are body, soul and spirit

(b) We are after His likeness because we are able to think and make decisions based upon our own reasoning

6. We should be doing God-deeds on this earth.

(a) God-deeds are actions that God would do if He were on the earth in the flesh

(b) Believers should be doing those things that Christ did and more

“12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” –John 14:12

7. He has given us dominion over everything upon the earth.

(a) That dominion is represented by authority.

(b) Our dominion is after His likeness

(c) He expressed His dominion by the spoken word and so do we.

IV. WHO IS AFFECTED BY THE GENERATIONAL CURSE?

A. All family members can be affected by a curse

1. Ongoing hereditary afflictions indicate a generational curse, such as:

(a) diabetes

(b) Predisposition to cancers

2. Familial or inherited traits indicate a generational curse, such as:

(a) Tendencies or weaknesses toward certain habits

(b) Such as smoking or alcoholism

B. Marriage can compound generational curses

1. A husband and wife are one flesh

“And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.” –Mark 10:8

“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” –Ephesians 5:31

2. The curse that is carried by one spouse is acquired by the other because they are one flesh

(a) What is of the one is of the other

(b) These curses are like chains of bondage attached to the whole family

(c) This indicates that generational curses are:

(1) Vertical, that is they pass from generation to generation

(2) Horizontal, that is they pass from spouse to spouse like a virus

V. BREAKING THE GENERATIONAL CURSE

A. God has equipped us with powerful spiritual weapons

“4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” —II Cor. 10:4-6)

B. “Strong holds” equate to generational curses.

1. Strong holds are fortresses or areas of control

2. They include imaginations and thoughts

3. Thus they are both spiritual and physical

a. Imaginations are of the spirit; that is they originate in the spirit realm

b. Thoughts deal with the mind and therefore the physical

c. Thoughts are a product of imaginations

d. Thus, thoughts are affected by the spirit world

C. The weapons of our warfare are spiritual!

1. They are activated by the spoken word.

2. We make declarations, in the name of Jesus, and the spirit world responds to the pulling down of strongholds

D. We must renew our minds

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” –Romans 12:2

E. A renewed mind means we are thinking as Christ would think

F. Conformity to this world is brought about by thinking like the world

G. Godly thinking proves what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

H. The scripture tells us to have the mind of Christ

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” Philippians 2:5

I. Renewed thinking produces positive expectations within us

“14And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”—I John 5:14, 15

J. The believer should have the utmost confidence in God

1. Failure to have confidence in God shows doubt

2. Doubt is anti-faith

K. The believer must first recognize the liberty that Christ has purchased for him

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” –John 8:36

“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” –Romans 8:21

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” –2 Corinthians 3:17

L. The believer has the authority to break the chain of the generational curse

M. His renewed mind gives way to new speech patterns which set in motion new life cycles

N. He speaks to the spirit realm, using his weapon of warfare

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” –Ephesians 6:17

O. The spirit realm must submit to the spoken word of the believer through the name of Jesus

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” –2 Corinthians 10:4

“10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” –Philippians 2:10, 11

P. The believer should do two things to break the generational curse

1. Repent for whatever produced the original curse either in his own generation or any previous generation

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” –II Chronicles 7:14

2. Speak to the curse and the spirit realm words that liberate the family from the effects of the curse.

“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” –Matthew 16:19

“18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” –Matthew 18:16-20

I CONFESS.

MAKE THESE CONFESSIONS

AUDIBLY, DAILY:

Jesus is the Lord of my life. I forbid sin, sickness and disease to have any power over me. I am forgiven and free from sin and guilt. I am dead to sin and alive unto the righteousness of God. (Colossians 1:21, 22)

I am free from unforgiveness and strife. I forgive others as Christ has forgiven me, for the love of God is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost. (Matthew 6:12; Romans 5:5)

Jesus bore my sins in His Body on the tree; therefore I am dead to sin and alive unto righteousness. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus and by His stripes I am healed and made whole. (I Peter 2:24; Romans 6:11; II Corinthians 5:21)

Father, because of Your Word I am an overcomer. I have overcome the world, the flesh and the devil, for greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. (I John 4:4)

You have given me abundant life. I receive it through Your Word and that life flows to every organ and tissue of my body bringing life and health. (John 10:10; John 6:63)

Heavenly Father, I attend to Your Word. I incline my ears to Your sayings. I refuse to let them depart from my eyes. I keep them in the midst of my heart, for they are life and health to all my flesh. (Proverbs 4:20-22)

Jesus took my infirmities and bore my sickness. Therefore I refuse to allow sickness to dominate my body. The Life of God flows in my body and brings healing to every fiber of my being. (Matthew 8:17; John 6:63)

Because I am redeemed from the curse I declare that the truth of Galatians 3:13 is flowing in my blood stream. It flows to every cell of my body, restoring health and life. (Mark 11:23; Luke 17:6)

Because I have given my life to Christ; He has redeemed me from the curse of the law. In His name, I have repented for any transgressions that my ancestors may have made that caused generational curses to cling to my family. We, my family and I, are free from the ongoing attack of the enemy through generational curses. We are redeemed and set free from Satan’s wicked attacks. (Galatians 3:13; John 1:12; I John 3:1, 2; 5:4, 5)

Father, Your life is in me. First Peter 2:24 flows in my blood stream, restoring every cell of my body. Your Word is made a reality in my flesh, and life is restored to every cell of my body in Jesus' name.

Lord, I serve You and You bless my food and water, and have taken sickness out of me. Therefore I will fulfill the number of my days in health. (Exodus 23:25, 26)

I present my body to God for it is the temple of the Living God. God dwells in me and HIS LIFE permeates my SPIRIT, SOUL and BODY so that I am being filled with the fullness of God daily. (Romans 12:1, 2; John 14:20)

That which God has not planted is dissolved and rooted out of this body in Jesus' name. First Peter 2:24 is engrafted into every fiber of my being and my body is alive with the life of God. (Mark 11:23; John 6:63)

As the head of my household, I declare that the thief is subdued and arrested. By the authority of Proverbs 6:30-31 I arrest the thief and bind him over to God who is my Magistrate. I declare that the devil shall begin to restore those things that he has taken from me and my family, sevenfold.

As the strongman of my household, I rebuke the enemy who has invaded my domain. He is cut off from my house and cannot bring disaster any longer. (Luke 11:21)

By the Word of God, I declare life, health and prosperity in my life and the lives of my family members. (III John 2)

I am redeemed from the curse and I forbid growths and tumors to inhabit my body. The life of God in my blood dissolves growths and tumors, and my strength and health is restored. (Matthew 16:19; John 14:13; Mark 11:23)

Jesus bore the curse for me; therefore, I forbid growths and tumors to exist in my body, for I am delivered from the authority of darkness. (Colossians 1:13-14)

Every organ and tissue of my body functions in the perfection to which God created it to function. I forbid any malfunction in my body in Jesus' name. (Genesis 1:28, 31)

Arthritis, you must go! Sickness must flee! Tumors can't exist in me, for the Spirit of God is upon me and the Word of God is within me. Sickness, fear and oppression have no power over me for God's Word is my confession. (Mark 11:23)

Thank you Father that I have a strong heart. My heart beats with the rhythm of life. My blood flows to every cell of my body restoring life and health abundantly. (Proverbs 12:14; 14:30)

My blood pressure is 120 over 80. The life of God flows in my blood and cleanses my arteries of all matter that does not pertain to life. (Mark 11:23)

The law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. I refuse to allow sin, sickness or death to lord it over me. (Romans 8:2; Romans 6:13, 14)

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in me permeating that life through my veins, sending healing throughout my body. (Romans 8:11)

In Jesus' Name I forbid my body to be deceived in any way. Body, you will not be deceived by any virus or disease germ. Neither will you work against life or health in any manner. Every cell of my body will support life and health. (Matthew 12:25; 35a)

Father, I resist the enemy in every form that he comes against me, I require my body to be strong and healthy, and I enforce it with Your Word. I reject the curse, and I enforce life in this body, in Jesus' Name.

I bless you Lord, and I refuse to forget your benefits: for You have forgiven all my iniquities; You have healed all my diseases; You have redeemed my life from destruction; You have satisfied my mouth with good things so that my health is renewed day by day. Thank You, Lord, You have given me abundant life and health. You are the strength and the Lord of my life. (Psalms 103:2-5)

As a child of God, I lay claim to the promise of Abraham according to Galatians 3:29; I am in Christ and am heir to all the promises of God. Because of God's Word I receive the blessing of Deuteronomy 28: I am blessed in the city and the field; I am blessed in the fruit of my body, the fruit of my ground, the fruit of my livestock; I am blessed in my basket and store; my coming in is blessed as is my going forth; My enemies are smitten before my face; the Lord hath commanded blessing upon my storehouse and all that I set my hand to do; He shall bless me in the land where I dwell; Because I keep His Word I am established and shall not fall; He has made me plenteous in goods and the fruit of my body; He has opened the treasures of heaven unto me; I am the head and not the tail; I am the lender and not the borrower; I shall live all my days blessed of the Lord. (Deuteronomy 28:3-13)
