How does traditional artwork influence games, animation and VFX?All games spark off with concept art that is heavily influenced by famous artists. Concept art is based around drawings. Animation in particular is influenced by traditional art. The pen and paper style of art has had an increase in popularity for its retro style appearance. The initial Simpsons sketches were primarily drawn in a rough style because at this stage it was heavily influenced by traditional art styles. By this, I mean it was drawn in the most common style, pencil and paper. In the short sketches of the Simpsons, originally known as “the Simpsons shorts,” were drawn very jagged, droopy and appear to be drawn very lazily. “Groening submitted crudely drawn sketches of the family to the animators, assuming they would clean them up in production. However, the animators just re-traced over his drawings; that is why the Simpsons appear crudely drawn in the shorts.” This is however different from the art style we see today on the Simpsons. The art style has still remained its distinctive yellow skin and the jaggedness of the Simpsons hair, but it’s had a lot more thought put into it and has been more carefully drawn to make it look more professional and clean. ”The shorts were created by cartoonist Matt Groening in the lobby of James L. Brooks’ office.” A different example of this, is the hit TV show, South Park. This is heavily influenced by the concept ideas done in the traditional style of cut-out stop motion animation. It was later adapted to be fully animated but it savoured the look of the traditional art style. “Parker and Stone developed the show from The Spirit of Christmas, two consecutive animated shorts. The latter became one of the first Internet viral videos, ultimately leading to South Park's production. The pilot episode was produced using cut-out animation, leading to all subsequent episodes being produced with computer animation that emulated the cut-out technique. South Park features a very large ensemble cast of recurring characters.” The game cup-head was inspired by the works of Walt Disney Productions. Its art style is unique for a game of this era as it puts a traditional 40s /50s style animation by most cartoons of this era. “A glorious throwback to the early days of animation. The run-and-gun shooter, out on Xbox One and PC in 2016, is a marvel to look at, taking cues from both Walt Disney and his fierce competitor Max Fleischer for its characters and environments. One of the hallmarks of this particular era of animation that made its way into Cup-head is the character design, which revolves around exaggerated features and huge, expressive eyes. ” “Cuphead was inspired by the rubber hose style of animation used in cartoons of the 1930s, such as the work of studios Fleischer and Walt Disney Animation, seeking to emulate their subversive and surrealist qualities.” Similarly, the game fallout uses a traditional cartoon art style similar to Walt Disney’s for its retro style art style back in the early 40s/50s. “The Vault boy character was mainly influenced by 50's ad mascots, and Rich Uncle Penny bags, the monopoly character. The style used in the fifties for ad cartoons". The game Minecraft could be considered to be influenced in its vfx by the classic 8-bit arcade games with its indistinguishable ‘blocky’ art style. “The low-res textures on cubes make for a very distinct art style - which you could call 'Minecraft-style' - and one that is being copied by countless open-world resource-collecting games. But I would argue it’s just pixel art applied to 3D.” Certain games and movies struggle to pull off the traditional look and be able to incorporate it into their own work. However for the games, vfx and animations that can, it makes it unique, memorable and nostalgic.SOURCES ................
