NEW MAC Setup Checklist-This checklist will provide a walkthrough on setting up new Apple computer (iMac, Macbook Pro, etc.). A majority of the steps are identical to setting up a Windows machine, however, Apple has different ways of presenting them to the user. Starting up the Apple Machine: Creating a local_admin account and setting up the user account.When you boot up the machine for the first time, it will ask you for keyboard language preferences, time zone, etc. Make sure you select the English language and Eastern Standard time zone. Next, you are prompted to give the computer a name, simply use the name of the Asset ID. When you are prompted for an apple ID, you can skip this part and go right to the desktop.To setup a local_admin account:Hit command & space, this will open the spotlight search in the top right of the screen. Search for system preferences and click it.Once in System Preferences, click the Users&Groups tab and a new window should open.Click the “+” and create the local_admin account using the current ITS password. Make sure to change the role of this account from standard to administrator.After this account is generated, a padlock might appear on certain windows. Using the local_admin account, you can unlock these windows and do your edits.Before leaving this window navigate to login options and change the “Display login window as” to “name and password” instead of “list of users”. By doing this, you are allowing this computer to accept any network account credentials at login. **Note** Any staff/faculty with a SCILSNET account will not be able to login to this computer until it is configured to the domain. To do this, record the MAC address and update that information in the respective ticket. Finding the MAC address:Navigate to: System Preferences->Network Settings-> Advanced options->Hardware, record the MAC (Physical Address).Bind the machine to SCILSNET DomainOpen system preferences and then click Users&Groups.Click Login Options and towards the bottom of the window, click edit next to Network Account Server.Open Active Directory UtilityFill in the information as shown below:Active Directory Domain – scilsnet.rutgers.eduComputer ID – Asset Tag NameShow Advanced Options:Under the user experience tab, make sure Create Mobile account at login is checked. However, leave the “require confirmation before creating…” checkbox unchecked.Mapping – leave fields emptyAdministrative – In the list of “Allow administration by”, click the + button and add “SCILS ITS – Partial Admins.After all of these fields are completed, hit BIND at the top of the window. DO NOT HIT OK, if you do, you will need to re-enter all of these fields.Finally, you will be prompted for Network Administrator rights: simply enter your .admin username and password account credentials.
