Guidelines for Applying for Scholarships -Spring 2020

1. Follow the scholarship organization’s directions, but submit your scholarship application materials in the best way you can. If required, type your application. If typing is not required, you may type or print information neatly using a dark pen.

2. Save or scan your application into a word document or pdf (some organizations may allow you to share a google document).

3. Send your completed application in the best way you can following the guidelines on the application or scholarship update. Email or mail your complete application.

4. If recommendations are required, ask teachers, counselors, coaches, or community members to email recommendations directly to the scholarship organization. Ask politely and give your recommenders adequate time to prepare and send recommendations.

5. Ask your school counselor or Mrs. Robinson to email your midyear transcript to the scholarship organization.

6. Email any questions that you have to your school counselor, Mr. Huck, or Mrs. Robinson. We want to help you as much as we can.

7. Feel comfortable communicating with scholarship organization contacts through email or phone call. Some scholarship organizations share contact information and some do not.

MOUNT TABOR PTSA SCHOLARSHIPS

Seniors who are members of the PTSA may be eligible for $500-$1,000

ACADEMIC, ARTS & ATHLETIC scholarships

Deadline: April 24, 2020

Applications for each scholarship are available in the MTHS School Counseling Center and through the Student Services like at the MTHS web site.

FAFSA COMPLETED?

Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at studentaid.. We encourage all seniors and their families to complete he FAFSA to determine financial aid eligibility. Check college and university web sites for FAFSA filing deadlines to maximize your financial aid (grants, work study, and student loans).

All seniors must complete North Carolina’s Residency Determination Service to determine eligibility for in-state tuition. Complete the survey at . You must receive a Residency Determination Number before completing the Forsyth Tech or any other NC community college application. Contact your school counselor if you have questions about the survey or your residency status.

WINSTON-SALEM ALUMNAE CHAPTER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Female seniors who identify as a racial or ethnic minority; academic excellence (3.0 or higher GPA), service, strength of essay, personal interview

NORTH CAROLINA SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Criteria: North Carolina seniors who will enroll in an accounting degree program (show intention to continue in the field of Accounting)

Awards: $1,000 scholarships

NORTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION FOR CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION GUIDANCE & CAREER DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Graduating seniors from any NC public school who have achieved CTE Concentrator status (completed a CTE pathway and were required to take the WorkKeys Test)

Awards: $750 scholarships, 8 scholarships (one per region in NC)

Criteria: Senior who is an active member and in good standing of the YMCA of NWNC Latino Achievers Program and planning to attend a community college or 4-year college or university; 2.5 minimum GPA: demonstrate the YUMCA’s core character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith

CLARENCE “BIG HOUSE” GAINES SCHOLARSHIP OF THE REYNOLDA ROTARY

Criteria: Alumni of Cook Elementary (or attended for at least 3 years) for education-related expenses to attend Forsyth Tech or Winston-Salem State University

Awards: Up to $2,00 per year for FTCC; Up to $5,000 per year for WSSU

BETA MU, BETA NU, AND ZETA CHAPTERS OF DELTA KAPPA GAMMA (DELTA KAPPA GAMMA) SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Senior who desires to continue his or her formal education and who has a goal of becoming a teacher

Awards: One $1,500 scholarship

Deadline: April 15,2020 to MTHS School Counseling Center (scholarship committee will select three applications to submit-communicate to Mr. Huck through email that you are planning to apply)

PHI OMEGA & PEARL SCHOLARSHIPS (ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC)

Criteria: The Phi Omega Scholarship will be awarded to two African-American female high school seniors in WS/FC who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, community service, and leadership.

The Pearl Scholarship will be awarded to three African-American female high school seniors who meet the same criteria and will plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Minimum 3.0 GPA; demonstrate evidence of service designed to improve the condition of underserved groups and/or populations

Awards: Five Scholarships, ranging from $500-$1,000

Deadline: April 15, 2020 (changed from April 1)

Criteria: Students who have been accepted and plan to attend Fayetteville State University; demonstrate excellence in involvement, participation, achievement, motivation and goals

Awards: At least two $500 scholarships

NAACP SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: WS/FCS seniors who plan to attend two or four-year college and demonstrate financial need; minimum GPA of 2.5

Awards: Five $1,000 scholarships

PSI PHI CHAPTER OF OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY 2020 SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: African-American males in the WS/FCS system

Awards: Generally, $1,000 scholarships

MARINE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Criteria: Children of Marines pursuing a post-secondary education at an accredited school---whether that be career training, trade school, community college, or a four-year college

Awards: Scholarships awarded to every eligible candidate

PB&J SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Developed specifically for students who have experienced challenges in their lives and want to succeed; focus on students whose test scores and GPAs may not be the best but are determined to succeed

Awards: $500 to $1,000 scholarships

VIENNA CIVIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Seniors from Mount Tabor, North Forsyth, West Forsyth, or Reagan high schools; awards based on need and merit without regard to gender, race, or national origin

Awards: $100 to $500 scholarships

BUFFALO SOLDIERS BICYCLE CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Seniors who have applied and been accepted at a college of higher learning with a GPA of 2.0 or better; based on need, proposed use, and the standing of the candidate in relation to other competitors---with the most weight focused on the quality of the final essay

Awards: Four $500 scholarships

Deadline: June 1, 2020 (changed from April 18)

WINSTON-SALEM POLICE FOUNDATION COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Seniors from Winston-Salem who will pursue and undergraduate degree; minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate outstanding leadership, school service, and community involvement; complete an essay on Police and Community Relations

Award: $1,000 scholarship

Deadline: May 8, 2020

LEWISVILLE CIVIC CLUB COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP AWARD

Criteria: High School seniors with involvement in activities which are similar to the purpose of the Lewisville Civic Club, i.e. community leadership and volunteer service to the Lewisville Community; school and community activities, 2.5 or above GPA; admission to a college, university, community college, or vocational school

Awards: Three $1,500 scholarships

Deadline: March 27, 2020 (follow directions precisely)

AES SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Available to all students based on character and writing an essay

Awards: $500 scholarships

JOSH GRAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are members of the girls or boys soccer teams and demonstrate strong character and leadership skills, extraordinary team spirit, concern for others, a positive and encouraging attitude toward teammates, and a genuine lover for soccer; academic promise and financial need also considered

Award: $1,000

Deadline: April 22, 2020 (turn in personal statement to Mr. Huck)

EDWARD KENT WELCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are accepted to and plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and demonstrate academic promise, evidence of strong moral character, genuine concern for others, and school and/or community leadership

Award: $500

Deadline: all seniors who plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill are considered in early May 2020; recipient announced at Senior Awards Day

COLLEGE BOARD OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Compete for scholarships through your College Board account: Practice for the SAT, Strengthen Your College List, Apply to Colleges, Improve Your Scores, Complete the FAFSA
