The following style of citation is based on the fifth edition of Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). It is recommended that this document be purchased and used as a reference in the classroom or laboratory.
Elements of reference for a periodical:
1. Journal article, one author:
Grimsley, T. R. (2003). In search of the typical eyewitness. Science Fiction Writing, 50, 36-39.
The article title is in lower case except for first word, journal is italicized; include the volume number of the journal and page numbers of the article.
NOTE: If more than one author, separate names with commas. Use last name and initials only. For the AND use the ampersand “&.”
2. Magazine article
Scribner, D. (2003, January 5). Seeing education work. Schools, 175, 34-38.
NOTE: Provide the date shown on the publication. Provide the month for monthlies or month and day for weeklies.
3. Daily newspaper article, no author
New course appears on the horizon. (2004, March 18). The Washington Post, p. A12.
NOTE: Use p. or pp. before the page number.
4. Books
Grimsley, R., & Newberry, P. B. (2003). Explorations in teaching and learning (3rd ed.). Wytheville, VA: Authors.
NOTE: List the publication information as the city with a colon and then spell out the name of the publisher. If it is the same as the author, simply place author.
5. Book edited
Grimsley, R., Sanders, C., & Cox, S. (Eds.). (2004). How to teach it right. Albany, NY: Project Lead The Way.
6. Film
Jude, R. (Producer), & Scribner, D. (Director). (2004). Learning the meaning of numbers [Film]. (Available from Project Lead The Way, 747 Pierce Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065)
NOTE: Specify the medium in brackets right after the name, in this case film. This would work for other non-print media, such as video tapes, audiotapes, slides, charts, and works of art.
7. Television series
Terrell, W. (Producer). (2003). The mind. [Television series]. New York: WDBJ.
8. Internet source basic elements
Author, I. (date the web page was last updated if known; if not, use n.d.). Title of article. Name of Periodical. Retrieved from website
NOTE: DO NOT put a period at the end of the path.

NOTE: Author may be the name of the site, as sometimes a specific author is not given.

9. Computer program, software, or programming language

NOTE: In brackets, list if software, program, or computer language. Do not underline names of either. If an individual has proprietary rights, name him or her as the author; otherwise, treat it as if there is no author. Enclose any additional information necessary for identification and retrieval in parentheses at the end of the entry. To reference a manual, provide the same information. In the brackets after the title, identify the source as a manual.
