In-Text Citation: In order to correctly cite sources using MLA style, you must include these four elements: Quotation Marks: Put “quotation marks” around any text that you did not write yourself. Signal Phrase: Write a signal phrase that tells readers who the author of the original source is. Parenthetical Citation: In parentheses, provide the page number where readers can find the quote you are using. If your source does not have a page number (such as articles published online), do not include a parenthetical citation. Works Cited page (see handout #45, MLA Works Cited Page) 442722088902. Signal Phrase 002. Signal Phrase Sample: Steven Shapin informs readers that organic farms are not necessarily small farms; he discusses a business called Earthbound Farm, which “grows more than seventy percent of all the organic lettuce sold in America” (429). 7886703810 00 8362952324101. If your work does not include page numbers (like many online sources), do not provide a page number. Example: If the author is named in a signal phrase… Laura Moser describes the possible structure of a four-day school week, stating, “Friday attendance will be optional, and instead of regular classes, struggling students can go to tutorials and get more individualized attention from teachers.” Example: If the author is not named in a signal phrase… One proposed structure for a four-day school week is, “Friday attendance will be optional, and instead of regular classes, struggling students can go to tutorials and get more individualized attention from teachers” (Moser).
