2. Literature Resource Center by Gale [Subscription Databases/Literature & Authors]

An Exceptional database: Also cross-searches Twayne's Authors Series (#7 below).

Search by TITLE (Select: Name of work) or AUTHOR (Select: Person or Keyword)

KEY Tabs: Literature Criticism and Topic & Work Overviews

Look at TYPE OF DOCUMENT: critical essay, overview, biography

TIP: NAVIGATE through your articles: Use Edit ►Find or Ctrl + F

Tab for Topic & Work Overviews has major reference books for you: Poetry for Students, Novels for Students, and Literature and Its Times.

HOW TO CITE:  The Source Citation is at the end of each article and is in the correct MLA 7th edition.

Save the URL from this citation (Document URL) because it is the permanent link to your article (not the URL in the top toolbar).

E-mail articles with MLA citations: CHANGE from MLA 6th to MLA 7th edition.

DICTIONARIES: Encyclopedia of Literature and Collegiate Dictionary (very top under Literature Resource Center)

3.  Bloom's Literary Reference Online by Facts on File [Subscription Databases/Literature & Authors]

This database is a resource for selected articles from critical books edited by Professor Harold Bloom as well as from other books and journals.

How to SEARCH: Use QUOTES when searching by title of work. This will produce better results!

ATTENTION: Citations at the end of the article are NOT in MLA style. This site uses the Chicago citation style as their default (ignore the "Citation" link - Page Tools - as it is incorrect).

"Record URL" at the end of the article is a permanent URL to the article. It differs from the one in the toolbar.  E-mail this URL or the whole article.

Please refer to the Format for Bib Cards  or LMHS Library's MLA Guide to cite this database.

         E-MAIL articles.

SAVE articles: Ignore the SAVE button in the database.  Use "Print" for printer friendly format. Copy and paste into Word.

4. Literary Reference Center by EBSCOhost [Subscription Databases/Literature & Authors]

Do an ADVANCED SEARCH (above Search): limit your results to FULL TEXT.

This database contains critical articles by Harold Bloom and other authors which appear in his books, journals, and major reference books. We own many of the Bloom books.

KEY TABS: Start with Literary Criticism (Bloom's books, Journals)

Plot Summaries: Masterplots has more than summaries: themes, criticism; Magill Book Reviews

Reference Books:  Literary Criticism (Bloom's books, Journals)

Biographies: More than biography! Critical Survey of Poetry -- Critical Survey of Long Fiction -- Critical Survey of Short Fiction -- Critical Survey of Drama

HOW TO CITE: At the top and bottom of each article, you will find: Print - E-mail - Save. Pick one of these links. This is an automatic citation tool.

Change the default in "Citation Format" to MLA.

Copy the citation at the top of the article. NOTE: Persistent link (Permalink) is always going to open to the specific article (not the URL in your Internet toolbar)

5. Gale Student Resources in Context [Subscription Databases/Literature & Authors]

Exploring Poetry will count as 1 source or 1 bib card even if you have several articles.

Try CRITICAL ESSAYS and ACADEMIC JOURNALS: Look for critical articles from journals like The Explicator, Studies in Romanticism, etc.

Source Citation (MLA format) is provided for each article at the end.

Save the URL from the citation (called Document URL) because it is the permanent link to your article. Open it anywhere.

The Explicator is a journal with full-text articles, which provide explanations and literary criticism for all literary works: poems, novels, plays, and short stories.

To access individual books, click the plus sign for "Literature" and search for your author or work.

Open the eTable of Contents for relevant chapters or fill in the search box.

HOW TO CITE:  Disregard "Citation Tools" when citing a chapter because the author's name is not in the right place (move to the beginning) or use the MLA GUIDE from LMHS Library.

NOTE:  The "Document URL" in your citation is a permanent link to your article.
