The training is also useful for those interested in advancing into higher level fiscal affairs positions at UM.The peer coaching/mentoring component of the Financial Development Certificate is intended to compliment the program of training courses presented by Human Resource Services. The certificate curriculum is flexible and may be started at almost any point in the program. Before you begin the certificate program, it is advisable that you find a fiscal affairs peer coach/mentor and work out a schedule to meet for at least two hours a month for 12 months. What is Peer Coaching/mentoring?Peer coaching is a process through which professional colleagues work together to build new skills, share ideas, and solve problems. Mentoring usually includes peer coaching but is a more extensive and formal approach involving a more experienced and knowledgeable individual who supports and assists a trainee who has less experience and knowledge in a particular area of expertise.Choosing a peer coach/MentorYou may choose a peer coach/mentor who is a fiscal affairs professional at any institution within the Montana University System. This person can be within your unit and a close colleague or from an outside unit about which you’d like to learn more. For example, a staff member at Missoula College can choose to meet monthly with a fiscal affairs professional on the mountain campus. Your peer coach/mentor should be someone you admire professionally, who perhaps holds a position to which you aspire, and who you think might be a good guide to new skills and knowledge. The working relationship that you build is an important partnership in this process. Peer coaching/mentoring is a two-way street. This connection will ensure continuous growth and learning. To gain different perspectives, you may decide to transition to working with a different peer coach/mentor at any point during your training. Be sure to communicate clearly regarding your transition to the peer coaches/mentors with whom you are working. You may approach a higher education professional independently or contact Beckie Christiaens, Associate VP of Administration and Finance, to be paired with a peer coach/mentor. peer coach/Mentor MeetingsAs you connect with your peer coach/mentor, review the knowledge and skills you gained at your recent training. Be engaged, ask questions, and learn how to apply concepts.ExpectationsThe certificate entails a significant time commitment, so plan ahead. You must complete the equivalent of two or more hours per month of peer coaching/mentoring under one or more higher education fiscal affairs professionals for a total of 12 months. At the end of your training, it is expected that you make a presentation to a unit dean or director based on financial data you have prepared. This demonstrates your command of the skills learned through the program. Your presentation may include financial projections or any other data a fiscal affairs professional typically prepares for the unit. You may give the presentation independently, with the assistance of your peer coach/mentor, or in collaboration with another colleague.Your peer coach/mentor will be expected to write a letter of recommendation that addresses your grasp of financial concepts, policies, and procedures; growth of your knowledge and skills; and details of the presentation you gave. If you choose more than one peer coach/mentor, each must submit a letter of recommendation. Please communicate this requirement as you start meeting with your peer coach/mentor so they know what is expected of them.0127000Two hours of peer coaching/mentoring per month for 12 months0-381000Presentation to a unit dean or director0-381000Letter of recommendation from peer coach/mentor ................
