Myclass exercise – student handout

Updated Baseball Lineup

Objective: Create a spreadsheet showing a lineup for a professional baseball team that is still playing and how an individual’s statistics would change based on the events of one game:

Topics for this Activity:

❑ Formatting numbers (percentages, decimals)

❑ Formulas

❑ View formulas

❑ What if analysis

1. Use the Internet to research 9 Red Sox players’ statistics (either current or end of last season)

2. Create a spreadsheet in Excel that lists first name, last name, number of at bats and number of hits.

a. You also need to create a formula that will give you the player’s end of year batting average….which is total hits divided by total at bats. Please carry out 3 decimal places

3. Save your file as lineup.xls in your excel folder

4. Your spreadsheet will have column headings (of your choice) for the lineup.

5. Now, you’re going to do some “what if” analysis.

6. You will need to include some additional columns on your spreadsheet. Assume that each player on your list was going to play one more game for 2012. Assume that each player was going to receive 2 hits in the game while getting up to bat 4 times. In separate columns on your spreadsheet, I’d like you to calculate:

a. Each player’s batting average for just the last game

b. Each player’s overall batting average for 2012 after the last game.

c. All formulas should contain cell references. It should also be set up so that if I asked you to change the last game’s data to 1 hit in 4 at bats, you’d only have to make one change.

7. Sort the batting lineup by overall batting average in descending order (make sure all of the data remains with the appropriate player)

8. Type your first and last name in the header section of this file.

View your file as formulas (rather than as values)

9. Save your file.
