How to add a show desktop icon to the Quick Launch toolbar in the taskbar

By Mitz

Applies to Windows XP and Windows Vista

This is a handy little trick that I recommend for every computer user out there. Clicking on the show desktop icon will minimize every window that is open to show your DESKTOP. How great is that.

Here's how to enable it.

1. Right click on Start at the bottom left and choose Properties 2. Choose the Taskbar tab

3. Tick Show Quick

Launch

Another way

1. Go down to your

taskbar and right click on it

2. Choose Toolbar,

then select Quick Launch

3. The Quick launch toolbar will appear in the taskbar.

Most of your icons from the desktop will appear there too. To remove un-wanted icons simply right click on them and choose delete from the menu.

To add an icon from your desktop or start menu, simply drag it onto the Quick launch toolbar.

I have a shortcut to: Internet Explorer Show Desktop Photo Express ACDsee Frontpage

Notes

? You can also choose to lock the taskbar will limit the length of your Quick Launch toolbar. Give it a try.

? If the show desktop icon does not appear, follow these steps to restore it.

1. Open Notepad and type the following text. (or copy and paste it)

[Shell] Command=2

IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar] Command=ToggleDesktop 3. Save the text you typed as file name Show Desktop.scf to your desktop. 4. Now the show desktop icon will be on your desktop and you can drag it to the quick launch toolbar. ? It is also handy to put a shortcut to your absolute favourite webpage in the Quick launch toolbar. You need to make a shortcut on the desktop and then drag it to the Quick launch. Here's how to create a shortcut to a webpage on your desktop. ? This process also applies to Windows Vista. The only difference is the colours of Windows. You still right click on the taskbar to bring up the menu and choose toolbars etc etc...(as above) You can even remove icons the same way. This dialog box will appear when you want to delete an icon.

Create keyboard shortcuts to open your favourite programs

By Mitz Did you know you can create your own keyboard shortcuts to open up your favorite programs, webpage's, and folders.. It is really easy. You can make a shortcut from any icon on your desktop. Here's how.

1. Choose an icon on the desktop to create a shortcut to. (How do I create a desktop

shortcut?)

2. Then right click on it to bring up a menu 3. Choose Properties. 4. Look for the shortcut key box. 5. Now type a letter in there and the rest will be filled in for you. Then choose apply

and ok.

6. See in the screenshot below. If I press Ctrl + Alt + A this program will start.

NOTE: ? Do not use the same shortcut key for two programs as the computer will get confused and will probably jam up. ? You cannot use certain keys in your shortcuts, like the Shift, Tab, Esc, and Windows key.

This tip also applies to all editions of Windows Vista.

How to turn Windows XP Firewall on or off

If you have another antivirus/ firewall program running, it is very important that you turn the Windows firewall and virus protection off. Otherwise it will interfere with the proper protection of your computer.

Where is the Windows security settings, you say? Go to Start menu>control panel>Security Center (More about the Control Panel)

To Turn the Windows firewall off follow these steps. 1. Go to control panel, then choose Security center 2. Then in the left resource box, choose Change the way Security center alerts me 3. Un-tick any of the three boxes. If you only want to disable antivirus, choose that box only. If you want to turn off the firewall, choose that instead. Most security suite programs have both antivirus and a firewall built in. Make sure you know what your program does before disabling anything.

4. To turn the firewall on, tick the box that says firewall.

You can also turn off just your firewall by going to control panel and choosing Windows Firewall. See the picture below. It says turning the firewall off is not recommended, however if you have other security it is not needed.

Notes:

? If the security centre does not show up in control panel, this means you have not downloaded your windows updates yet.
