Terminology

• Icons, tool tips, folders, clipboard

• Folders – organize your files using folders.

• The Right-Mouse-Button – right-mouse-click – useful almost anywhere!

• The Task Bar – minimized programs

o Left side – user opened programs

o Right side – automatically opened programs like virus software, audio control

• The Start Menu/Button – lower left hand corner of the toolbar (more details below)

• Windows – minimize, maximize, and close

• FAQ’s = Frequently Asked Questions

• Browsers

o URL – the address of a web page, usually the text version

o back

o forward

o reload

o home – how to change it

o stop

o scroll bars

o status – spinning upper right and text lower left

o Favorites/Bookmark

o Search

• Netiquette –

Terms

Spam, troll, flame, newbie

• Backups – make cd backups frequently as well as save often

• File Extensions

File extensions tell you what type of file:

Text - .txt HTML .htm or .html

MS Word document .doc MS PowerPoint .ppt MS Excel .xls

Start menu/button

Click on Start to bring up choices such as All Programs, Control Panel, shortcuts to frequently used programs.

Deleting Files ( Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin needs to be emptied periodically.

If you delete a file by mistake, open the Recycle Bin and undelete it.

Control Panel – brings up Classic View or Category View

Go to the Control Panel to set up printers, remove software, etc. Be careful!

Category View ( Appearances and Themes

Pick a task to change the theme, desktop background, screen saver.

Right click on Start for other options such as Explore

File Management

File/Folder options – In Explorer, right click on the file or folder icon.

Backups: In Explorer, click File ( New ( Folder and type in a name that is unique to that folder. Use the right mouse to copy and paste files/folders.

My Computer – click on the My Computer icon or use the Start button

Left click on the local drive and select Properties. Under the General tab, Capacity shows the amount of free and used space on the disk. Under the Tools tab, Microsoft provides two utilities. Error-checking checks for errors on the drive and Defragmentation orders the files for more efficient storage and faster access.

To add an email account to Outlook Express:

Tools ( Accounts ( Mail tab ( Click on Add to start the wizard and select Mail. Follow the wizard, adding your name, email address, and the incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Toolbars - add a toolbar to your browser to block pop-ups and to add search to any web page:

Look at the tabs across the top for various options. On the General tab:

• Home page - change to whatever site you want

• Temporary Internet files –

o Click the Delete Cookies button to get rid of cookies

o Click the Settings button

WinZip – compresses (zips) files and folders into a single .zip file. Also, uncompress (unzips) the .zip file. Often, software is downloaded in a .zip file.

Skin chooser – Pick a skin and click Apply Skin. Use the tool tips to get back to full mode and make other changes.

Fill out the registration form. Create a safe password – a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers making sure not to use a word. Suggestion – the first letters of a favorite phrase.

System Updates for Windows and other Software

Check for software updates, security patches, and antivirus updates.



Check what Microsoft says happens with each update. Some updates cause problems with other programs. Suggestion: google the update and see what other reliable sources say.

Protecting your computer

Use a surge protector. Turn off computer during storms.

Warm reboot: CNTL + ALT + DEL

Call Dell for tech support or go to – check Tech Support initial year and extended for total number of years. Call them first!
