Discover US is for young people who are interested in finding out more about university. This fun and inspiring three year programme will help school students to develop their knowledge of Higher Education. We want our Discover US students to believe that a place at university is within their grasp and to give them the tools to be successful there.

As a Discover US student you will...

? Visit the university of Sheffield three times a year to get to know our campus

? Find out what it's really like to study with us and to live the life of a student

? Meet other school students and increase your confidence and communication skills

? Work with undergraduate students and find out what they think about university

? Discover the possibilities that a university education can open up for you

? Use your experiences to help you make informed choices when considering Further and Higher Education.

Activities

The programme aims to encourage you to find out more about Higher Education and what it could mean to study at the University of Sheffield; supporting you to make considered and informed decisions about your future. It will help you to discover the wide range of subjects and courses that are available through a variety of exciting and interactive activities.

Your Discover US journey will start in Year 9 and continue through to the end of Year 11, with 3 visits to the University each year.

Year 9

Welcome to US ? an opportunity for you and your parents to find out more about the University and the Discover US programme.

Introduction to US ? a day of activity to explore our campus, discover the differences between school and university, and consider why people go into Higher Education.

More about US ? an activity day which introduces you to the wide range of courses available at the University of Sheffield.

Year 10

Two Practical Experience Days ? exciting hands-on subject taster sessions will really give you a flavour of what our courses can offer, while skills workshops help you to develop key skills in areas such as careerplanning and managing money.

The Student Experience ? a residential experience to find out what it's like to be a student. You will stay in our award winning student village and take part in a range of exciting student life activities as well as an enterprise team challenge.

Year 11

Two practical Experience Days ? a chance to further explore the wide range of courses available at the University of Sheffield with more hands on subject taster sessions, along with study skills workshops to help you make the most of Year 11.

Celebrate with US ? a graduation-style awards ceremony for you, your parents and school staff, looking back at our three years together.

Who can apply for Discover US?

Discover US is for young people who have the academic potential to succeed at the University of Sheffield but who, for a variety of reasons, may feel uncertain about whether it is the right option for them. School students are selected by their school to become part of Discover US.

Young people must meet the following criteria in order to take part:

? Be the first generation in their immediate family to enter Higher Education

? Be from an area of low progression to university (your school can help you with this information)

? Show the academic potential to succeed at the University of Sheffield (your school will provide us with this information)

The Discover US Experience

Over your 3 years on Discover US you will make new friends, develop skills like team work and problem solving, and of course have lots of fun! You will need to attend all the activities to get the most out of the experience, and see just how far your interests and aspirations could take you.

At each event, you'll get the chance to meet and work with our fantastic Discover US Student Ambassadors. These current students will share their first-hand experience of what University life is really like, and can answer your questions about university study, workload, courses, and career choices. They will also work with you to develop your confidence as well as key transferable skills like communication and decision-making.
