Assignment # 2 Box and Whisker Plots

Assignment # 2 Box and Whisker Plots

Here is some abbreviated data about sugar in breakfast cereals. Several students helped me decide whether these cereals were eaten primarily by children, primarily by adults, or enjoyed by both children and adults.

| Product |% of the dry weight that is |Who usually chooses these cereals |

| |sugar |(children or adults) |

| Froot Loops |48.0 |C |

| Cocoa Krispies |43.0 |C |

| Lucky Charms |42.2 |C |

| Sugar Frosted Flakes |41.0 |A |

| Cap'n Crunch |40.0 |C |

| Trix |35.9 |C |

| Cocoa Puffs |33.3 |C |

| Post Raisin Bran |30.4 |A and C |

| Frosted MiniWheats |26.0 |A and C |

| Life, Cinnamon Flavor |21.0 |A and C |

| AllBran |19.0 |A |

| Life |16.0 |A and C |

| Product 19 | 9.9 |A and C |

| Total | 8.3 |A and C |

| Wheaties | 8.2 |A and C |

| Rice Krispies | 7.8 |A and C |

| GrapeNuts |7.0 |A |

| Special K |5.4 |A |

| Corn Flakes |5.3 |A |

| Kix |4.8 |A and C |

| Cheerios | 3.0 |A and C |

| Shredded Wheat |0.6 |A |

I made two groups of this data;

1. All of the cereals eaten by children (even though adults might eat these cereals as well).

2. All of the cereals eaten by adults (even though children might eat these cereals as well.)

The children's data, arranged from least percentage of sugar, was this;

|Cheerios |3 |

|Kix |4.8 |

|Rice Krispies |7.8 |

|Wheaties |8.2 |

|Total |8.3 |

|Product 19 |9.9 |

|Life |16 |

|Life, Cinnamon Flavor |21 |

|Frosted MiniWheats |26 |

|Post Raisin Bran |30.4 |

|Cocoa Puffs |33.3 |

|Cap'n Crunch |40 |

|Lucky Charms |42.2 |

|Cocoa Krispies |43 |

|Froot Loops |48 |

There were 15 cereals in the children’s sample.

To make a box and whisker chart of this data, you will need to mark 5 summary pieces;

Least % sugar =

First quartile % sugar =

Median % sugar =

Third quartile % sugar =

Most % sugar =

1. Create a Box and Whisker Plot of the children’s data and leave room to place a second plot directly underneath it for the adult data.

_________________________________________________________________This is the adult data. There are 19 cereals listed here.

2. Calculate this data’s 5 summary pieces and create a Box and Whisker plot immediately under (and lined up with) the children’s Box and Whisker plot.

|Shredded Wheat |0.6 |

|Cheerios |3 |

|Kix |4.8 |

|Corn Flakes |5.3 |

|Special K |5.4 |

|GrapeNuts |7 |

|Rice Krispies |7.8 |

|Wheaties |8.2 |

|Total |8.3 |

|Product 19 |9.9 |

|Life |16 |

|AllBran |19 |

|Life, Cinnamon Flavor |21 |

|Frosted MiniWheats |26 |

|Post Raisin Bran |30.4 |

|Trix |35.9 |

|Sugar Frosted Flakes |41 |

2. Are the children’s cereals significantly different in sugar content then the adult’s?

3. Is the range of the adult’s cereal percent sugar content what you would have expected?

4. Do you think that these statistics are similar to the statistics you might have gotten from your immediate and extended family?

5. What observations can you make about this comparison?
