BEST OF SHOW WINNERS – SECOND TRIMESTER

“DESIGN YOUR OWN”

CARTOON CHARACTER

Project Directions

CRITERIA:

✓ One large cartoon in the center of your character with his or her “friend”

✓ Four small cartoons, one in each corner, of your character in motion using action lines for guidelines

✓ Sharpie outlining over all

✓ Areas blackened in for contrast

✓ Center picture colored, outer pictures black and white only

✓ Name of character written at bottom, capital letters, using guide

DIRECTIONS:

1. On scratch paper draw a large version of your own original cartoon character. Your character may be animal or human, alien, robotic, or anthropomorphic. It must include legs and feet, eyes and mouth, and a body of some sort. The rest is optional. This picture should be approximately 5-6” in height.

2. On scratch paper draw a small friend for your character. This friend should be MUCH smaller than the main character.

3. On scratch paper, sketch your MAIN character in four DIFFERENT actions using the attached pages for guidelines. These cartoons should be smaller 3-4 inches high – and able to fit into the corners of a sheet of 11 x17” paper. Use action lines to help you out in the rough draft.

4. When you have all your designs done on scratch paper, get a new sheet of 11x17 white paper and go to the light table. Trace your cartoons onto the good paper, centering the large character and friend in the middle and the smaller action cartoons in the four corners. Go over all lines with black Sharpie and then erase pencil lines.

5. Color the main character and friend with colored pencils.

6. Use the line guide provided by Mrs. R to LIGHTLY pencil in some straight lines underneath the main character. Using ONLY capital letters (Upper case), pencil in the name of your character and his friend. Go over the letters with Ultra-fine tip black Sharpie. Erase the guidelines.

7. Sign your name along the edge of your main cartoon in Ultra-Fine Sharpie.

8. Mount on a matching piece of 12 x 18 construction paper, 8 staples total according to mounting directions on page 5. Complete a grading sheet. Draw an angry face in the lower left corner of the grade sheet. Turn both together into oversize in-box.
