Option A

All girls have been charged to create a doll using any of the characters from the novel Coraline. It does not matter which approach or style you use for this project. I have provided several methods of creating a doll in this packet. Please use your creativity. The due date is November 20, 2007. Please turn in your assignment on time. It will be counted as a test grade.

Option B

If a journey was involved, draw a map with explanatory notes of significant places in the story Coraline.

Option C

Make a story quilt from the novel Coraline.

EASY DOLL MAKING PROJECT

|[pic] | |

|A 13 year old girl made this doll as a "first doll project". The kit was purchased from a local craft supply store, and consisted of |

|the head with shoulders, and body (with arms and legs) to stuff and attach. An adult may be needed for sewing together the top of the|

|body after stuffing, and for attaching the body to the shoulders. The wig was purchased separately and was glued on using a basic |

|tacky craft glue. |

|[pic] |Step 1: Assemble tacky glue, quilting pins, cotton for |

| |stuffing body, doll pieces, wig, needle and thread, scissors|

| |and spoon (we used a spoon for stuffing - "real" doll makers|

| |use a stuffing fork). |

|[pic] |Step 2: Stuff body with cotton (arms and legs are already |

| |attached). |

|[pic] |Step 3: Use pins to close off top of body. Stitch closed. |

|[pic] |Step 4: Lay out head/shoulders so it's ready to attach. |

|[pic] |Step 5: Stitch head/shoulders to body per package |

| |instructions. This kit required stitches to back and front |

| |of both shoulders, using a long needle to go through the |

| |body and head attachment. |

|[pic] |Step 6: Glue on wig, using a tacky craft glue. Doll is now |

| |ready to dress! |

Sock Babies!

by Diane Lewis

[pic]

They are so easy, so cute and so huggable!  You can make them with very little sewing.  All you need is a pair of socks, some stuffing and you are on your way to making this cuddly little doll.  The size of the doll is determined by the size of the sock you use.  The Sock Babies have only a few parts which can be sewn either by hand or on a sewing machine.  If you are going to sew the seams by hand be sure to use a double thread and small stitches so your doll will not lose her stuffing.  Have some fun this summer by making a whole family of sock people!

The instructions are below.

Sincerely,

Diane Lewis

| |Professional artist Judy Mulford has come up with a great way to recycle old jeans that you've outgrown or that have gone out |

| |of style: turn them into life-size dolls that can serve as decorations around your house. |

| |Materials: |

| |Six to eight large sheets of newspaper |

| |ScotchB. tape |

| |CrayolaB. crayon or pencil |

| |Scissors |

| |Old bed sheet |

| |1' of stacked newspapers shredded into small strips |

| |Old clothes: shoes, socks, hat and wig |

| |18" stick or straight branch |

| |Ruler or short stick |

| |Straight pins |

| |For the pattern, tape four to six large pieces of newspaper together at the edges. |

| |Have a subject lie down on the newspaper with arms and legs spread out. Trace around the person with a crayon or pencil. Avoid|

| |using a marker, which would seep through the newspaper to the surface below (figure A). |

| |Cut out the head and body to the crotch. Cut out legs and arms separately. Angle feet sideways before cutting out (figure B). |

| |Fold the sheet in half, and pin on the pattern pieces. Cut around the pieces 1" from the pattern edges. Cut four pieces for |

| |the arms and legs (figure C). |

| |Machine or hand-stitch the pieces together, and clip the curves (figure D). |

| |Stuff the body with 1/2"-wide strips of newspaper. Stuff three-fourths of the head, and add a stick. Stuff solidly around the |

| |stick in the head and the neck. The stick will add support to the neck. Use the ruler or shorter stick to solidly pack the |

| |newspaper. This is important to keep the head upright (figure E). |

| |Finish stuffing the body, and whip-stitch the lower body together. Stuff the arms and legs. |

| |Tie strings around the elbows and knees. Sew the arms to the top of the shoulders and the legs to the bottom of the body. |

| |Dress the doll with your subject's clothes. Wigs and hats are important to the character of the final piece. If the doll is |

| |female, create breasts by adding a bra and stuffing the cups with old socks. Faces may be left blank, or you may draw on |

| |features (figure F). |

| |Tips: |

| |These soft "people" are great fun to make and place around your house. You can make one in less than a day. |

| |If you're a woman and drive long distances alone, leave the legs off a male doll, and place him in your passenger seat. |

| |To make the dolls look more real, purchase a lifelike head mask (figure G). |

Instructions.

Trace all of the pattern templates onto freezer paper.

Cut out all the freezer paper template pieces.

Body. On doubled stretch fabric right sides together, and on the fold at the bottom, iron on the body template. Sew around the template leaving open at the top (neck) where marked.

Cut out the body, leaving a 6mm (1/4”) seam allowance around the sewing line. Turn to right side.

Using a funnel, fill the bottom third of the body with sand, or gravel from pet shop (fish tank)

Place a paddle pop stick in through the neck and push it down firmly into the gravel.

Fill the upper body and shoulders with poly filling, keeping the stick in the center.

Gather the opening at the top and close it over the paddle pop stick. Don’t turn the ends in.

Legs. On doubled woven fabric right sides together with the stripes matching, iron on the leg templates. Sew around the templates leaving open at the tops where marked.

Cut out the legs, leaving a 6mm (1/4”) seam allowance around the sewing line.

Turn the legs to the right side. Fill the legs firmly with poly filling.

Ladder stitch the legs to the body, to make a sitting position. See the Picture.

Arms. Cut out the arms (one piece) on the fold as shown in the pattern. Sew down one side, leaving both ends open. Turn arms to right side.

Tie a knot in the center of the piece for the hands.

Fill the arms loosely with poly filling. Sew the open ends onto the doll at the shoulders.

Skirt. Gather a piece of 2” ribbon about 18” long to make a skirt, or hem a piece of fabric to finish at 2” Draw it in to fit the doll at the hips. Sew the skirt directly to the doll at the hip line.

Head. On doubled stretch fabric right sides together, iron on the head template.

Sew around the template leaving open at the top where marked.

Cut out the head, leaving a 6mm (1/4”) seam allowance around the sewing line. Turn to right side.

Push a 2” diameter foam craft ball inside the head. Run a hand gathering stitch about ½” to ¾” down from the cut edge and pull the gathers in to stretch the covering over the head.

Secure the thread. This gathered part is the top of the head.

Face. Draw or paint on a face. See the picture.

You can embroider the lips with stranded cotton using satin stitch, for greater definition.

Hat. On doubled stretch fabric right sides together, iron on the hat template, sew around the curved part of the template leaving open at the bottom where marked. Cut out the hat, leaving a 6mm (1/4”) seam allowance around the sewing line, turn under a ½” hem. Turn hat to right side.

Hair. Sew a strip of feather boa to the hat.

Blouse. This is just a frill of double edged lace. 1/2 yard (50cm) x 2” or 2 ½”.

Run a gathering stitch ½” in from the top edge, pull the gathers in to form a 9” long frill.

Zig Zag some gold crochet cotton or other pretty trim over the gathering stitch line for contrast.

Pin the frill in place, at the dolls shoulder line then sew direct to the doll.

Finishing. Using a sharp scissors, cut a small slash for her neck, about ½” in from the sewing line of her chin, at the back.

Push a hole with the scissor points in to the foam ball, to insert the paddle pop stick.

Push the neck in to the cavity formed in the ball. Ladder stitch the head to the neck.

Trim the join with beads or braid if you like.

Open out the hat and place it on her head to cover the gathered onion head look!

Pin the hat in place with a few pins just stab them in through the hat, into the foam ball to hold.

Check to see that the face is not covered by the feathers….

Sew the hat to the head fabric, using a back stitch.

And there she is! Fancy Nancy.

Looking very fancy in her stripped stockings!

I hope you enjoyed making Fancy Nancy, she’s just the thing to use up all of those scraps of interesting fabrics and lace and small bits of trim, lurking in your sewing cupboard.
