Similarity/Dilation Project

Math 2Name ______________________________Similarity/Dilation ProjectDate _____________________________Size Transformations: The Big Picture In a previous class, you practiced dilating and contracting Mario from Super Mario Bros. Now it is your turn to find your own image on which to perform a size transformation. Here are the details:You will need the following materials to create your own size transformation.A cartoon, photograph, clip-art image or some other image to dilate.White computer paper. Drawing tools such as a ruler, pencil, eraser, markers, and/or colored pencils.Procedure:Check off each step as you complete it._______ Find an electronic image to copy and paste onto a Word document. Turn your document so the orientation is “Landscape.” Print your document. (You may also tape or glue your image to your computer paper if you do not find one electronically.)Your image cannot be letters or numerals. For example, you cannot do “OSU” or “23”._______ Using a pencil, draw a point to represent the center of dilation. Label the point C._______ Determine what the magnitude of the dilation will be. Make it large enough so that the dilation image fills up your paper._______Pick a number of key points along the edge of your image and then dilate those points by your chosen scale factor. Use the same technique that was used to dilate the Super Mushroom and Mario on the Applications of Transformations activity. You must have at least 20 control points. You must use a pencil and ruler for this step._______Once you have dilated your control points, connect them to form the outline of your dilation image. You do not have to dilate the parts inside of your figure. You must use a pencil for this step._______Use a marker or colored pencil to trace your newly-created dilation.Do not erase the line segments that were used in the dilation process. It is OK to color over them, though._______Add the inner details of your pre-image to the dilation image and use color to enhance._______Give your dilation a title and neatly write it across the top of your project._______Write your name in the lower right-hand corner of your project._______In the space above your name, use measurements and computations to show what the magnitude of dilation is for your project.Due Date for Project: OVER Evaluation RubricRequirementsPoints PossibleMy CheckTeacher’s GradePre-image is on paper.1Center of dilation is on paper and properly labeled.2At least 20 points are accurately dilated.8Line segments are drawn with a pencil and a ruler.2Outline is drawn and traced over with marker or colored pencil.1Inner details are added to dilation image.2Title is neatly displayed across the top of the project.1AppearanceImage is accurate.Color is used to enhance the display.Project is neat.4 21Measurements and computations for magnitude of dilation are shown and are accurate.4Procedural steps and rubric are checked off where indicated by student.1Name is printed in the lower right front corner of the project.1Pre-image is challenging and unique.5 Total Possible: 35 Project Total: This paper must be turned in when you turn in your project! ................
