The Test Of A Good Game - Mr. George Academics

The Test Of A Good Game

We at Hasbro, Inc., the makers of Milton Bradley® and Parker Brothers® games, believe that

board games will always be an important part of everyday life. In today’s world, with more

entertainment options than at any other time in history, people still play games because they

provide a social experience unlike any form of entertainment.

In a child’s early years, games teach cooperation, planning, decision making, competition, and how

to win and lose gracefully. Best of all, these fundamentals are learned in a context of fun and

enjoyment. For older children and adults, games continue to be an excellent way to socialize and

create fond memories.

At Hasbro we take fun seriously and that’s why every new Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers

game must pass a “Five-Question Test” before it can take its place alongside such classics as

CandyLand®, Scrabble Brand Crossword Game®, Trivial Pursuit®, and the Monopoly®Game.

Anyone can use the Five-Question Test to figure out if a game has the right ingredients to entertain. See if the games you

enjoy pass the test:

Is the game fun to play?

Is it a truly enjoyable experience? Does the personal interaction among the players bring pleasure, joy

and happiness…more than just a way to pass the time?

Is there a reward?

What is the object of the game? There should be a goal, a finish line, or some other clear-cut point where

someone is declared the winner.

Is the game challenging?

A good game should make you think or plan ahead, and leave you with some feeling of accomplishment. If it

is too easy to win or ends too quickly, then an important part is missing.

Is the game “non-frustrating?”

A game that seems unbeatable is just as bad as one that is too easy. No one likes to be discouraged. A

game must be carefully designed to give the player a reasonable chance for success.

Does the game provide a fresh experience every time you play?

Each round should be fresh and interesting, and continue to challenge and entertain every time

it is played. A good game will be enjoyed over and over again.
