1. Explain the difference between descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with less than 50 words?

2. Name two graphs that can be used for describing qualitative data and two for describing quantitative data. Name one graph that can be used to examine the relation between two categorical variables.

3. Define and compare the mean, median as measures of central tendency and describe under what conditions are the use of mean preferred and under what conditions is the use of median preferred.

4. The pulse rates (per minute) for 7 patients visited a doctor this morning were recorded as the following : 67 77 88 75 72 76 79. Find the sample mean and the sample standard deviation of this sample of pulse rates.

5. The data below are the survival times in days of 20 lab rats infected with a deadly bacillus in a test of resistance to infection.

Give the five-number summary for the data above, find the inter-quartile range, and explain its skewness.

b) A male patient has a pulse rate 79 per minute. Is this patient’s pulse rate above the 90th percentile of healthy male adults? Find the 90th percentile.

7. According to a behavioral risk study, 40% of college students in certain region of the country often don’t wear seatbelt. If a random sample of 7 college students in this region were selected, what is the probability that six or more students in this sample often don’t wear seatbelt? (Binomial Experiment is assumed.)

8. If number of new cases of disease A occur in a community following a Poisson process and is, on average, 3 cases per day for the next few days, what is the probability that there will be no new cases tomorrow?

9. In a research study concerning body weights, researchers estimated the mean body weight and it was 150 lb and standard deviation was 15 lb. What does Chebychev’s inequality tells us about the distribution of the body weights in the range from 120 lb to 180 lb?

10. Use Internet to find the most recent statistics on reported number of persons living with AIDS/HIV in Mahoning county, Ohio, and show how many of them are males and how many are females. You need to show the web address that provided you this statistics. (It can be the statistics of any recent year, but you must indicate the year.)
