GPA CALCULATIONS:

STEPS TO GPA CALCULATIONS

Your GPA can be found on your transcript

Step 1- Ask Mrs. Bacher or Mrs. Sarabia for a copy of your transcript. You will use the chart below for every class in which you received 1.0 credit. (0.5 credits earn ½ of the points). If applicable, do not forget to include any credits earned in middle school.

Letter # of GPA

Grade: points earned:

A = 4

B = 3

C = 2

D = 1

Step 2 - Write the # of GPA points earned next to each credit earned column on the transcript (Labeled “CR”)

EXAMPLE:

Class Grade % credits earned/CR GPA pts. earned

1 Algebra 1 A 98% 1.0 4

2 Biology B 85% 1.0 3

3 English B 89% 1.0 3

4 ACT Prep A 93% 0.5 2 (1/2 credits=1/2 # of points)

5 Economics B 78% + 0.5 1.5 (1/2 credits=1/2 # of points)

Total credits earned: 4.0

Step 3 - Add up then take the total # of point and divide by # of credits

4+3+3+2+1.5 = 13.5 → 13.5 divided by 4 = 3.375 (GPA’s are never rounded up or down)

Step 4 – Do you want to predict your future GPA? For example, “What will my GPA be at the end of this school year if I make all A’s and B’s in my classes?”

On your transcript, write down your current 8 classes, write the highest (reasonable) letter grade you can make, assign the # credits (1.0 or 0.5), then list the appropriate # of GPA points for each. Follow step 3 to include ALL classes completed and your current classes for the projected GPA.

General information you need to know about GPA’s:

• Which GPA on my transcript do colleges and scholarship agencies use? The one that says “Cumulative GPA”

• GPA’s on your transcript only update in January when the half-year classes end (0.5 credits) and then in May when the year-long classes end (1.0 credits). Students may/may not have half-year classes each year in high school.

• 2.5 GPA is generally the lowest GPA accepted to be admitted to colleges. Chattanooga State accepts everyone regardless of their GPA.

• 3.0 GPA is generally the minimum GPA needed to be eligible for scholarships. 3.5 is another important minimum GPA for the higher dollar scholarships. (Check each scholarship to find their individual requirements.)

• A tip to increase your GPA:

o Make A’s in your ARTS classes. You were accepted to CCA due to your amazing talent so there is no reason you cannot earn all A’s in high school in these classes. Also, if you struggle in the academic classes, the A’s in ARTS classes can help balance and bring up your GPA.

o A 93% earns the same GPA points as a 100 for an “A”.  And an 85% earns the same as a 92% for a B.  So, if you are on the border between 2 letter grades, work hard to pull it up in order to earn an extra GPA point.

• GPA’s are never rounded!

• The Cumulative Numeric Average (AKA: “NGA”) on transcripts are used to determine the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and the top 10% of the graduating class in September of your Senior year.
