PETAL MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND

SYLLABUS 2016 - 2017

The band program at Petal Middle School is designed for upper and lower intermediate skilled band students. Students must have completed one year of beginner band at Petal Upper Elementary School or an equivalent beginner band program (for students transferring into the school district). Those students seeking to start an instrument for the first time can only do this in the 7th grade band. Those students must seek permission from the band directors BEFORE adding band to their schedule.

This is a performance-based class. You are required to attend ALL performances. You will also be required to perform in small groups and individually in front of the class on a regular basis. The ultimate purpose of the middle school band program is to prepare the students to be contributing members of the Petal High School Band.

Topics:

During the semester we will cover the following topics: tone production, intonation, technique, rhythm, balance, blend, expression, theory, and history. These elements are explored through many technical exercises and warm-ups, as well as, standard concert band literature.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken every day at the beginning of class. It is VERY important that band students maintain high standards in their academic classes. Low academic progress can result in students not being able to participate in band class on a regular basis.

Tardies

Every student is expected to be in the band hall when the bell rings and in their seat with all of the materials required to participate in class within one minute of the bell ringing. A timer will be used to enforce this rule. Any student not in their seat upon the completion of one minute will receive an infraction.

PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE

ALL PERFORMANCES ARE REQUIRED. UNEXCUSED PERFORMANCE ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT LOSING 50 PTS FROM HIS OR HER AVERAGE. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE A PASSING GRADE IF A PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN MISSED. I DO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE CERTAIN EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES (DEATH OR SEVERE ILLNESS) THAT WOULD LEAD TO AN ABSCENCE. I ADVISE PARENTS TO PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH THE DIRECTORS IMMEDIATELY IF AN EMERGENCY ARISES.
