Chapter 4 Notes

• School doesn’t get any better for Scout, but she deals with it

• One day on her way home from school she spots something shining a knot of an oak tree in front of the Radley house. Upon inspection it is a stick of gum. She decides that it looks and smells safe so she chews it > Jem freaks out when she tells him where she found it and demands that she throws it out.

• Shortly after this discovering the kids find an Indian-head penny in the knot hole. School ends and Sill come back for the summer.

• The kids spend the summer playing games > the “Boo Radley Game”> they act out stories that they have heard about the Radleys – Atticus catches them and tells them to stop.

• The chapter ends with the tire rolling game > roll each other in a tire – Scout bumps into the Radley house and swears that she heard someone laughing from inside.

Chapter 5 Notes

• They stop playing the Radley Game but Jem thinks that they should just change the names of the people and Atticus will never know that they are still playing it. Scout disagrees , but Dill is all for it.

• Jem and Dill begin to play more together and leave Scout out > so she spends her days with Miss Maudie Atkinson- widow neighbor (42-43)

• Maudie talks to Scout about Boo and attempts to separate the facts from the fiction for her.

• Jem and Dill decide that their going to use a fishing pole to get a note to Boo by passing it through one of the windows of the Radley house.

• Atticus catches them and he is livid> he tells them to leave him alone, it is not their place to get him to come out and they will stay away from the place until they are invited.

• The chapter ends with Jem furious at Atticus

Chapter 6 Notes

• It’s the evening before Dill is supposed to leave and go home. Jem and Dill want to have one last shot at looking into the Radley place. Scout pleads with Jem not to go and he accuses her of “acting more and more like a girl every day.” This makes her mad and she agrees to go along with the plan.

• They go through the backyard and garden to get to a window on side of the house, they lift Dill up to look in, but all he can see is curtains.

• Dill wants to try the back porch windows, when they are on the porch they are frighten by the a shadow of a man and run off. During the flight Jem ‘s pants get caught on a face as he is trying to crawl under it> so he decides to wiggle out of them and leave them behind.

• Mr. Nathan Radley wakes up the neighborhood when he fires his gun, saying that he heard something in his garden.

• Later that night Jem decides to sneak out of the house and go back for his pants . He comes back shaken.
