Focus Group Discussion Guide

Facilitator Discussion Guide

Introduction:

1. Welcome

Introduce yourself, your co-facilitator and the notetaker. Please have participants sign in with the name of the department they represent.

Review the following:

• What we’re trying to do through this process

• What will be done with this information

2. Explanation of the process

We have a series of 4 questions to discuss. We want to look at health through the broadest lens and scope. The main goal today is to start talking about what we can do together as a City and not just as departments especially in the pre-identified zip codes.

About discussion groups

• We learn from you (positive and negative)

• We have City Business plans for you to see where there may be other objectives that could have an impact on health

• We are gathering information

• No virtue in long lists: we’re looking for priorities and where do we want to go and how can we collaboratively get there.

Logistics

• The discussion groups will have basically an hour and a half to discuss all 4 questions.

3. Ground Rules

Ask the group to suggest some ground rules. After they brainstorm some, make sure the following are on the list.

• Everyone should participate.

• Stay with the group and please don’t have side conversations

• Turn off cell phones if possible

• Have fun

4. Ask the group if there are any questions before we get started, and address those questions.

5. Introductions

• Go around table: job here, where you were born

6. Discussion Questions

• Discussion Question #1 - “What are departments currently doing to improve quality of life and life expectancy metrics across the whole City?”

• Discussion Question #2 – “What are the unique resources/actions that departments can build upon?”

• Discussion Question #3 - “What would success look like for working together to positively impact quality of life?”

• Discussion Question #4 - “What day-to-day operation, policy or change can I/we do right now, to facilitate this process?”

Discussion begins, make sure to give people time to think before answering the questions and don’t move too quickly. Use the probes to make sure that all issues are addressed, but move on when you feel you are starting to hear repetitive information.

7. Ranking

Rank the Top 3 interventions from question #4 and be able to report out in the larger group
