General Instructions: Working alone or in a group of up to three people, respond to both of the following assignment sections.

Part 1 – Analysis Section - Reading: Choose 5 of the following key terms from Acts 1 and 2 and explain / define them. Now explain how we have witnessed these 5 terms in action so far in the play. Make sure you make specific references to specific events and characters from Acts 1 and 2 to support your answers. Also explain why the terms you chose have played an important role in the plot of the play so far. Quotes from Acts 1 and 2 may be helpful as well. To receive an “A Range” grade, you must be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the chosen terms and establish a clear connection (using specific examples and/or quotes) between the chosen terms and key plot / character developments so far in the play.

Part 2 – Artistic / Creative Section - Representing: Complete the following creative representing assignment. To receive an “A Range” grade, your mask must creatively represent your chosen character and you must be able to establish a clear connection (in writing) between the images and symbols on your mask with the character you chose to represent.

Masks (literal and symbolic) play an integral role in Act 1 of the play. Choose one of the main characters from Acts 1 or 2 (Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Tybalt, Benvolio, the Nurse, etc.) and create a mask that he or she might have worn to the Capulet party. The mask must be decorated with symbols, images and/or words that represent your character’s personality. Now write a strong expository paragraph (don’t forget a good topic sentence and concluding sentence) explaining why you chose the words, images and symbols you did to portray the character on the mask.
