MYTHOLOGY TRADING CARD PROJECT

Grade 6

The Pantheon: Classical Gods and Goddesses

Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were polytheistic societies; that is they believed in and worshipped many different gods. Both societies had a pantheon or set of gods and goddesses that they worshipped. Each god and goddess had certain particular qualities that characterized him or her. The ancient people then would pray or worship the particular god who had control over that area of life.

The most prominent gods in ancient Greece and Rome were very similar. There were 14 major gods and goddesses in both societies and each god and goddess held reign over similar realms of society. These were called the Olympians. Their Latin names are as follows:

Jupiter

Juno

Apollo

Mars

Vesta

Minerva

Mercury

Diana

Neptune

Venus

Ceres

Vulcan

Pluto* Bacchus*

You will research about the 14 deities and create a deck of trading cards showing the important information that you have learned about each.

MYTHOLOGY TRADING CARD PROJECT

Purpose: to learn the fourteen major Roman deities and to become familiar with their titles, symbols, spheres of influence, and other related facts.

Project: Create a deck of Mythological Trading Cards, one for each of 14 major Roman deities.

You will make a separate card for each deity that contains the following information:

FRONT OF CARD

a- Deity’s Roman name and Greek name – correctly labeled

b- A picture of the deity (The picture must be clear. It could be a drawing, piece of clip art, or photo of an ancient statue or painting.)

BACK OF CARD

a- Domain: What is this deity in charge of? There may be more than one area. (sky, travelers, etc.)

b- Relationship to other gods or famous mortals. (Give the names of (a)parents, (b)siblings, (c)spouse and/or (d)children. Give two separate categories for full credit!)

c- Symbols: What objects are identified with each deity? Each god or goddess will probably have more than one symbol. These symbols would identify them in an ancient art.

d- Habitat: Where does this deity live? – Olympus, sea, underworld?? This does not mean planets!

e- Short but interesting pieces of information about each deity. This section must include at least 3 sentences. All could be about the same topic, or about different topics.

CARD FORMATTING: Card design is up to you but should meet the following standards.

▪ Use the same format for all cards. The cards should look like a deck. They should “go together.”

▪ Card size must be between 5” x 8” and 9” x 12”.

▪ The cards should be of sturdy paper stock (e.g. blank index cards, heavy construction paper, poster board, or card-stock paper)

▪ Neatness counts. No visible glue or tape on your cards. Do NOT use staples.

▪ Pictures should be attractive and attention-getting. You will lose points for fuzzy internet pictures; don’t blame your printer.

▪ Spelling and grammar counts! Get help proofreading to avoid careless mistakes!

LIST OF RESOURCES:

▪ You must turn in a list of resources you use for information.

(This must include any websites and sources for all pictures.)

▪ Resources may be listed on a separate sheet (in ABC order!) or included on each card.

▪ If you use sites which you found on the class website, you may simply use the domain name. (e.g. .)

▪ If you find sites via a web search, you need to give the entire web address & date visited.
