Derivatives and Graphing Internet Activity:

Derivatives and Graphing Internet Activity:

Graphing the Derivative: Read the two basic facts about the derivative of a function (at the top of the page). You should know and understand these foundational concepts.

• Read through example 1.

• Complete example 2 yourself.

Derivative Puzzles:

• Click on the first red box. It is an Applet: On the definition of the derivative. A new window will open. Move the slide bar at the bottom. This illustrates the slope of the tangent line at different x-values on a graph. Close the window when you are done.

• The next three red boxes on the right are matching first and second derivative graphs with the original function. The directions for the puzzle are to the left of the three red boxes. Read those first.

• Complete the three puzzles. Click on the check button at the top of the window when you think you have the graphs matched correctly.

• Close those windows when you are done.

• Finally, just a bit further down the home page you will see a link to big derivative puzzle. This puzzle asks you to match 4 derivative graphs with 4 functions. Do this.

• Notice, that as you place the derivative graph with the original function graph the word TRUE or FALSE appears above the graph based on whether or not you are correct. Once you have tried the four given graphs, click on Load New at the bottom. Try matching these new graphs.

• Continue to play the matching game until you are consistently matching all 4 graphs correctly the first time.

Derivatives and Graphing:

• Here you will see 10 exercises. Click on the first exercise.

• You are put a check next to the letter of the point for which each question (1 through 8) is true. Once you think you have all the checks placed appropriately, click on Check Answers at the bottom of the page.

• The box that pops up will tell you only the first question that is wrong. Close the window and fix that question and then click Check Answer again. If you fixed that question correctly but a later question is wrong it will tell you that. Continue fixing, if needed, until all questions are correct.

• Try as many of these exercises as you would like, until you feel comfortable with the concepts.

If time permits…

Quiz on Derivatives and Graphing:

• Here you will find three graphs, all a different color. You are to choose which color is the function, the first derivative, and the second derivative.
