Excel Graphing

Over the next two days we will be exploring how to graph various types of graphs using excel. Your challenge is to make them look professional and include all elements of TAILS.

Bar Graph

1) Enter the data provided into column A starting at cell #1. Now click on the insert tab and select chart. A window will pop up. Click next.

2) To select your series or data, highlight the data you have entered. Highlight only numbers! Once highlighted, tell the series that your data is in columns. Click next.

3) Insert the title associated with the data I provided you. Do this by going to the title tab.

4) Insert a name for your X axis with the data I provided you. Do this by going to the axes tab.

5) Insert a name for your Y axis with the data I provided you.

6) Click finish. The bar graph will now show up.

Now we are going to format the graph:

1) Delete the legend “series” box by clicking on it and pressing the delete key.

2) Right click on the graph and click format chart area. Click on border none. This will eliminate the border.

3) Now double click the background color and change it to white.

4) Now click on the grid lines and delete them by using the delete key.

5) Click on one bar of the graph; then double click and change the color to grey.

You graph should now look like this! Have Mrs. Z check it off that you did it correctly.

Pie Chart

1) Enter the data provided into column A and B starting at cell #1. Now click on the insert tab and select chart. A window will pop up. Select pie chart. Click next.

2) Click next and then finished. The pie chart should now show up.

3) Insert a title for your chart by right clicking on the chart and going to chart options. Insert the title I have provided below.

Now we are going to format the graph:

1) Right click on the graph and click format chart area. Click on border none. This will eliminate the border.

Your final pie chart should look like this! Have Mrs. Z check it off that you did it correctly.

Line Graph/X Y Scatter Plot

1) Enter the data provided into column A and B starting at cell #1. Now click on the insert tab and select chart. A window will pop up. Select X Y scatter. Click next.

6) Click finish. The x y scatter graph will now show up.

Now we are going to format the graph:

1) Delete the legend “series” box by clicking on it and pressing the delete key.

2) Right click on the graph and click format chart area. Click on border none. This will eliminate the border.

3) Now double click the background color and change it to white.

4) Now click on the grid lines and delete them by using the delete key.

5) Click on the plot area (where your data points are), now right click and select format plot area. Now select border none. This should delete the border around the plot area.

Now we are going to add a trend line.

1) Click on one of your data points, now right click on it. Select add trend line.

2) A box should pop up. Select linear trend line and press ok. A trend line should appear on your graph.

Your final X Y scatter with the trend line should look like this! Have Mrs. Z check it off that you did it correctly.
