Text: “Microsoft Office Excel 2003", Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques, Shelly, Cashman and Quasney

Equipment: Data disks or jump drive

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides students with practical hands-on instruction in the use of spreadsheet software. The student will learn spreadsheet basics, work with formulas, apply advanced formats to worksheets and charts, link workbooks, create charts, do financial and data analysis, and make predictions.

CULTURAL INTEGRATION

In keeping with the college’s goal of incorporating a cultural component in the classroom, students are encouraged to explore and share elements of their various cultural heritages through their scholastic efforts.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

a. identify parts of the Excel window

b. use menus, dialog boxes, and help features

c. create, edit, enhance, format and print spreadsheet worksheets

d. write formulas using Excel

e. create, embed, edit, enhance charts

f. create, edit, sort, search, save and print data lists

g. create pivot tables and data maps

h. create and use a hyperlink

i. draw, insert, format, and embed objects

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Weekly Assignments will be given with due dates specified.

Mid-term Exam: Mid-term exam with consist of computer terminology in a matching, multiple-choice, and fill in the blank format.

Final Exam: The final will be an open-ended spreadsheet project.

GRADING SYSTEM:

Daily Assignments 50%

Mid-Term Exam 25%

Final Project 25%

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Attendance will be recorded daily as required by college policy. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the assigned material. Please call the instructor or another student for the assignment. If you know you are going to be absent, please see or call the instructor in advance for the assignment. Regular attendance is highly recommended.

COMPUTER TIME

Approximately 6 hours per week of additional computer time outside of class will be recommended for the successful completion of the course requirements. The computer labs are located in the Little River Learning Lodge, the Learning Center, and the Library; feel free to use these labs to work on your assignments.

To do their own work, never copy other student’s assignments and not subcontract assignments to family, friends, and other students.

To refuse to do assignments for another student and if asked, to remind the student that honor must be earned and intellectual growth calls for individual effort.

Guard against plagiarism. Always give credit to the words and ideas of others. A student who violates academic honor may fail the assignment, the course or face expulsion from FBC.

In the event that you are caught violating the academic honor policy you will fail my course. All I expect is from each of you is that you do your own work.
