Small Group Discussion, using Google Hangout; Group Summary report on GH; ‘Posting’ on C2C

** It may help to print these instructions!!

a. AT LEAST A DAY PRIOR TO YOUR HANGOUT (if you have not done this already): Setting up and activating your YouTube account

a. On plus., click on YouTube, on top task bar.

b. It will take you through the instructions to set up a YouTube account.

c. You will have to have a cell phone accessible, as it will ask you for a mobile # to send your activation code to….& then you will enter it to ‘activate your account’.

b. Setting up your Small Group Discussion on GH

a. Arrange a date/time that is convenient to meet as a group for your Hangout.

a. 5 min prior to the Hangout - Each group member should be ‘logged in’ to their Google plus account (plus.).

b. Group Leader (person that will ‘initiate your Group Hangout’):

a. 5 min prior to the Hangout - The Leader should go into their YouTube account (). Click on YouTube (top Black Task Bar). Then, click the ‘drop down arrow’ on the Top Right Task Bar, beside your ‘login name/photo’)…..& select “My Channel”. Then, on the Top Blue Bar, click on “Live Stream to your Channel Now”.

b. This will take you to the “Google Hangout” page.

i. Give your Hangout session a ‘Name, include Date’.

ii. Invite members. Type the names of your colleagues; or select one of your ‘Circles’. You can create a ‘special Circle & give it a group name, if you wish’.

iii. Click ‘Enable Hangouts on Air’ so that the video link for your Hangout will be ‘live streamed’ and will also be saved on your YouTube account.

iv. Acknowledge that the video will be streamed to Google + & your ‘YouTube’ channel.

v. Click ‘Hangout’.

c. When everyone is there & you are ready to start broadcasting……Click Red box ‘Start Broadcast’ (it gives you a ‘countdown from 10 sec to 1 sec!’)

d. “Broadcasting Publicly”….click OK.

e. Ending your Google Hangout

At the end of your Small Group Session, click the ‘Hang up’ (phone receiver symbol) icon on the Top Right corner of Google Hangout…..and “End Broadcast” (if streaming live!)

c. Group members:

AT THE SCHEDULED TIME FOR YOUR HANGOUT:

a. Each individual should join the ‘Group Hangout’ (You will see a ‘little red box’ on the top, right task bar…beside your ‘name’. Click on the ‘red box’ and it will take you into the Hangout.

b. Someone in your group should volunteer to ‘take notes’ and agree to ‘do a short Group Summary’ following your group discussion. This ‘Small Group Summary’ will be recorded on Google Hangout and the link to the summary will be posted in the Week 12 Forum on C2C. NOTE: Whoever is doing the Group Summary must have activated their YouTube account (See Step a above!!)

c. Ending your Google Hangout

At the end of your Small Group Session, click the ‘Hang up’ (phone receiver symbol) icon on the Top Right corner of Google Hangout.

c. Recording your ‘Group Summary’ (Instructions for whoever is doing your Group Summary)

a. Have your ‘summary notes’ to refer to, if you wish! (You must have activated your YouTube account – Step a above!)

b. First, go into your YouTube account (). Click on YouTube (top Black Task Bar). Then, click the ‘drop down arrow’ on the Top Right Task Bar, beside your ‘login name/photo’)…..& select “My Channel”. Then, on the Top Blue Bar, click on “Live Stream to your Channel Now”.

c. This will take you to the “Google Hangout” page.

i. Leave ‘Invite members’ BLANK!

ii. Give your Hangout a name (‘Small Group Summary-Name of Paper author;year’

iii. Click ‘Enable Hangouts on Air’ so that the video link for your Hangout will be ‘live streamed’ and will also be saved on your YouTube account.

iv. Click ‘Hangout’.

v. Click RED ‘Start Broadcast’ (it gives you a ‘countdown from 10 sec to 1 sec!’)

vi. Acknowledge that the video will be streamed to Google + & your ‘YouTube’ channel.

vii. When you have finished your Summary, Click ‘End Broadcast’.

d. ‘Posting’ your Group Summary on C2C

Finding your ‘saved Google Hangout’ in your YourTube account

1. Note: It may take a couple of minutes to save the file to your “YouTube” page.

2. Go to the Google + Homepage ()

3. Click on ‘YouTube’ (on the top Black task bar!)

4. Then, click the ‘drop down arrow’ on the Top Right Task Bar, beside your ‘login name/photo’)…..& select “My Channel”.

5. Click on the file to view….you can then also ‘copy & paste’ the link to your video/Hangout to send to your colleagues or post in C2C.

e. Setting the Privacy Settings for Videos

A. Go into your YouTube Channel ....select 'My Channel' from the drop-down;  Select 'Video Manager' (black button at top Right task bar);  Click the 'drop-down arrow' beside Edit, beside your 'Group Summary Video';  Choose 'Info & Settings';  Under 'Privacy Settings', select 'Private';  Under 'Only people you choose can view', enter the email addresses from the Class 'gmail addresses';  "SAVE Changes".

If you have the class email addresses in an Excel spreadsheet, you should be able to just 'highlight the column with the email addresses' and cut & paste all the addresses into the box.  This will allow only the people in the class to have access to the video!

B. Cut and Paste the ‘Video URL’ (found under ‘Video Information’ on the upper, right portion of your Video Editor window) into a ‘New Note’ in C2C in the applicable Forum. Give this ‘New Note’ a name to indicate “Small Group Summary-Author name;year”
