Southwestern Minnesota Synod

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS:

As far as music … there are plenty of hymns in our hymnals and supplements that are appropriate for healing and care of the neighbor when we think of lifting up those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS both in our companion synod in South Africa as well as in our own country.

There is a special song written by Ray Makeever in his collection Dancing at the Harvest. It’s copyright Ray Makeever and administered by Augsburg Fortress, so anyone with a copyright license can reproduce it.

The song is called “Someone in Need of Your Love.” It fits in nicely with the sermon. It could be sung by the congregation, a soloist, small group or choir.

The words are:

Someone in Need of Your Love

1 Look at you neighbor and what do you see--

is it the face of humanity?

Look once again and I think you will find

someone in need of your love.

2 Then look far beyond your own face into time,

where the past, the present, the future combine

to teach you the lesson of heart, soul, and mind--

someone in need of your love.

Refrain

There’s someone in need of your love:

someone who’s lonely, lost on their way.

Sighin’ or cryin’, maybe near dyin’,

someone who can’t find the right words to say:

there’s someone in need of your love.

3 Well, it could be the stranger stretched out on the road

as you’re travelin’ to Jericho.

Or it could be somebody much closer to home,

someone you already know. Refrain

If you use/adapt the worship material for a Sunday not in Advent, you might want to include some of the hymns and songs that come from South Africa. The index in the back of our hymnals and supplements showing the Sources of Service Music and Hymns will be useful in identifying these.
